I was just wondering what all you glasses wearers use when riding. I need glasses for driving but can get by perfectly well without for other things, just can't see miles away. More recently I feel that I am struggling to judge take offs when jumping as the fence seems a bit blury to me so thought I should ride with my glasses but I am worried that if I had a fall it could be dangerous. Do you wear glasses to ride or can you get special toughened glass or am I best trying contact lenses (which i'd rather not do as i am very squeemish!).

I do have contacts but cant wear them round the horses witht the dust etc getting in them.

I ride in mine. Fell off a while ago and totally destroyed them but didn't dmanag myself. The likelyhood of the lens shattering is basically zero - they're plastic and they rim will give way and the len fall out before they smash.

I used to ride in mine but after breaking 3 pairs in 2 weeks with falls I switched to contacts. If you can get contact lenses (even if just the dailies and only use them for riding) this does take out a lot of the hassle. But glasses shouldn't shatter if you fall as they are made with safety glass, I found that its actual the frame the gets completely broken and you end up having to get it fixed all the time.

Its up to what you feel happiest in really. There isn't really any danger in riding in glasses but I just feel more comfortable in lenses. Having said that, a couple of months ago Penny managed to nudge me in the face and knock one out and I had to cycle home with only one in.... now that does weird things to your depth perception!

I usually wear my contact lenses, don't seem to have too much problem with them attracting dust/shavings etc.

I do ride in glasses sometimes though. I worry that if I take a tumble they'll get broken as they frames were quite expensive but touch wood so far it hasn't happened. sometimes find they slip down my nose if I get hot and sweaty [gross

LOL... was speaking about this the other day with friend, I wear glasses normally but they often slide a bit down my nose when '' intesively schooling''

So for clinic, competeing etc I pop in daily disposable lenses - no issue with dust etc yet...

I dont like riding in mine but I have to because I am as blind as a bat without them! But I wear contact lenses most of the time anyway.
Go to your optician for a free trial. I thought I would struggle to put them in its really not that bad!

But I used to ride in glasses just fine. It's just annoying when it rains and i can't see

Thanks, quite odd but i've never met anyone else who rides and needs glasses. I could put some elastic round the back of my head when I'm riding to stop them slipping down or flying off!!

I don't ride in mine, and do have trouble seeing into the distance etc, but at £100 a pair I can't afford to break them so they stay in the car

I use the daily disposable ones for riding in. They are like cling film and once you get the hang of it, easy to put in. I used to be able to put them in on the train coming home from work before lesson and eventually could even do it without a mirror! Makes a lot of difference and means you're not at risk of breaking expensive glasses and not so distracting.

My dad once fell off when wearing his glasses and they pretty much sliced his nose off. It was hanging on by the skin on the other side. He had to have it stitched back on and now has a scar running almost al the way round his nose. He never rode in glasses again and neither would I.

I ride in mine- without I can't see a thing and I can't get contacts. In 12 years of dailey riding with them I have only broken one pair. I find they are more likely to damage me- and riding with a fixed peak hat to some extent stops the edges of the glass cutting under my eyes. XC they get steamed up, and occasionaly they slip down, or if my hat moves the slightest bit it rests on them but I really can't go without :p. I tried gymkanah games with out as the got very steamed up. I said I couldn't see the bending poles, they told me to go anyway, we crashed, and did an imaginary extra pole.

I've ridden in glasses for nearly 20 years and have never broken a pair. Ok, they get steamed up sometimes, and are not great in the rain, but I can't wear contacts very often so don't have much choice.

I used to ride in contacts because I worried that if I fell off they might hurt my face, but one time I did fall off with contacts in I broke my nose! So now I just ride in glasses, although I do put contacts in if it's raining.

Unless its raining I don't find it a problem. I used to take them off because I was worried I would injure myself if I fell off and if I remember I take them off for more dangerous things like hunting. Easier and cheaper than contacts. Yes, my glasses did cost £230 but a years worth of contacts would cost that much anyway and I've not broken my glasses yet

Luckily I'm long sighted, so don't need them for riding, but can't see the paper, let alone the words, if trying to read anything. Feed quantities, worming instructions... no chance.
And as for the screen on my mobile....!! I've never been able to fit my glasses on under my hat anyway.

I have to switch to my lenses, cos my glasses slip up and down my face and its flipping annoying! Distracts me from what I am doing so its better for me to have lenses.

Also, they are rubbish when its raining as can't see jack!

I normally ride in mine - can't see without them and have never had problems as such. They can slip and steam up on occasion.

When competing I always use contacts - I have the daily ones so I can just pop them in as and when I want them. I also normally use them when doing jumping at any time just in case and when backing Chancer I used them all the time until I knew he was settled.

I need mine to drive and see long distances so don't wear them for riding, but I do wear them for driving (the horse).

My friend wears hers for hacking and competing and doesn't have a problem apart from what everyone else has said about them getting steamed up sometimes.

I'm very squeamish but I just 'bit the bullet' and got contact lenses. It's quite scary when you first get them but after a while you just get used to it. My boyfriend wears glasses but uses disposable contact lenses for when he plays cricket. He was terrible at putting them in and he thought he would never master it but he's ok at it now.
