Weather is lovely and I'm riding almost daily at present, as I'm sure many of you are also.

I've noticed something very worrying though, this last couple of days.

I have a brown arm, white watch mark, brown strip below watch and white hand as I ride in gloves!

It's not a pretty look but I hate riding glove-less as Patches can pull at the reins which hurts my hands after a while. If I'm hacking on the roads, I tend to wear a long sleeved top. However, schooling at home or on an off road farm ride, I prefer to wear something cooler especially if I'm wearing my Body Protector as well.

So, what do you all do to prevent this type of tanning?

Its sun block for me - but then I don't get tan lines, just burn lines

i never wear gloves unless the temps drop below freezing and I can't feel my fingers..have calloused hands of an 80 year old as a result..would wear a vest or similar (ok as long as you use good suncream)
I don't own a body protector

I always ride in gloves and sometimes roll the top over for hacking in the summer so they're only on my hands not my wrists if that makes sense

It makes the line less noticeable and if you move them around it works even better!

I can't not wear gloves whe I ride otherwise my hands will be rubbed to shreds (happens with anything I ride) so I have white hands and wrists, the tops of my fore arms are permanantly darker than the rest of me, the underside of my fore arms are bright white along wirth the rest of me an my upper arms (from about half way down to just below my elbow is starting to go darker......I look really odd but it's got to the point where I don't really care anymore

Alternate what I wear!

If I'm schooling and there's no one else to see except the trains, which hopefully go past too fast to notice, I have been known to ride in a bikini and skull but nothing else. This is NOT a pretty sight I can assure you but we are well out of view.

If I'm hacking or jumping I wear long sleeves and gloves. String back gloves do let some sun through so you don't look dead-white on your hands.

I think I'm the queen of tan lines! What about swapping the wrist your watch is on every now and then, or just taking it off altogether when you ride (and putting it in a pocket or something).

The only way I have found to get rid of those tan lines (and to tan those legs!) is to spend the rest of the time that I'm around the horses and not riding in shorts and a singlet, or if it's hot enough, a bikini! The neighbours must love me on a hot day...

Just noticed exactly the same thing myself! I always ride in long sleeves xcountry or jumping (lesson learnt from taking the skin off both elbows through a fall) usually a really light shirt of OH's tied in a knot....doing flatwork I just leave the gloves off & ride in short sleeves...or no sleeves

Riding in a bikini! OMG! Doesn't the saddle or leathers chafe?

Never thought about the possibility of gloves out there that let the sun through. Will investigate!

I tend to ride in rugby shirts alot. I've been bought some long sleeve polo shirts by the mother in law. Very old fashioned, but cooler than the rugby shirts as much thinner material.

I tend to wear short sleeved tops at home though.

Im a bit like Kat and fall into the "dont really care" category

Always ride in gloves otherwise my hands either become rough and calloused (spelling?) which i hate or they're shredded. Also I generally school in strappy vests over summer. The fronts of my arms are always browner than the backs and i also get "crease lines" where my elbows are bent

I do tend to wear high factor sun cream though as Im really not fussed about tanning anyway and prefer to protect my skin. Ive always found that i have tan lines at the start of the summer where my gloves sit, but a month or so in and they've faded to barely noticeable because my hands are exposed the rest of the time.

Im not riding atm but was out over the weekend with leather wristbands on both arms and i now have lovely tan lines where they were

Couldn't care less, always end up with tan lines on my wrists, about 3 inches down my arms as don't wear sleeveless tops and the legs where my shorts end!

I try to avoid lotioning too much as like every other beauty product it tends to make me rash, which does not really help prevent burning

Doesnt bother me as will have tan lines at the top part of my arms anyway - if I'm having a lesson you have to ride with a top with sleeves (can be short though) because of if you fall off (esp when you're hacking) & grave yourself etc

Joys of H&S eh?

So it doesnt bother me, and then I spend days at Hickstead with no sleeves so it evens out

I have never noticed this being a problem, and if it was I don't think it would bother me at all....I'm not that bothered about such things.

By now I'm used to having brown forearms, a burnt neck and being glo white everywhere else ... I have no pride.

Mind you it has to be really hot for me to wear even short sleeves - get goose-pimply so easily, must have very odd circulation.
