Riding in Portsmouth (UK)

Fort Widley is probably the better of the two now, and it has a big indoor school for winter lessons.

I used to go to HMS Dryad and they had some great horses and lovely indoor/outdoor arenas. I loved it. We also took some of our guys to Widley which they seemed to enjoy.

MM - Has Dryad changed much in the last few years then?

HMS Dryad is very good, I used to ride there when I competed for the Navy in tri service competitions. They have some nice horses

Gingerbird: I understand that the Naval Riding Centre isn't quite as good as it used to be. But this is purely hearsay, as I haven't been myself for a few years. Certainly it used to be excellent - I rode there for several years, and kept Marius there for 18 months when we first bought him. I loved it.
The horses I knew and loved have gone now, and I understand that the quality of teaching is not so good. But I repeat, this is hearsay.

Thanks for that MM. Was Marius there between 1996 - 2001 by any chance?

I used to love riding Jeddy, Val, Turner, Hooch, Impy and that big loopy grey mare that would have a skit for no reason....oh the list is endless

I worked and studied there for 2 year between 1987 and 1989, when I went back with my OH in 2001 much had changed but one of my horses was still there and going strong his name was Jeffery!

I used to ride Valentina, Lynx (the loopy grey mare? LOL), Ben, Northerner and Sindy. I loved Sindy.

And of course I remember Jeffrey! What a character!
Oh, memories!

Thorney Island (Emsworth) do riding lessons and have a good indoor school, outdoor school and an XC course. The lessons are very reasonably priced compared to Dryad and Widley. And you get to ride ex cavalry Queens Guard horses!!

I have the number for the saddle club Sargeant if you would like it PM me.

Personally wouldn't touch Dryad but that's only because I've known people who have worked/ridden there.

Know someone who's kids ride at Thorney and have heard good things.

You could always head Chichester way which has a very good riding school just to the north of the city
