Hi all,

It’s been a while so I hope this is okay to post here — I’m looking for a bit of guidance and possibly some recommendations.

I lost my pony nearly a year ago, after having him for almost 20 years. As you can imagine, it’s taken some time to even consider getting back into riding, but I’m starting to feel ready to ease myself back into things. He was it for me, but I also thought we had more time ahead of us than we did.

I’ve ridden for many years — but I am now feeling a bit rusty after a year long break now. I’m not really sure if a typical riding school setup is quite what I’m looking for but I think it may be my only option to get back in the saddle whilst I consider looking for something to buy again.

I’m in Shropshire but willing to travel a bit beyond for the right place. Does anyone know of anywhere who offer lessons tailored to slightly more experienced riders getting back into it, my memories of riding schools may be a little off though, having not been since I was a beginner!

I’ve tried a couple of local riding schools but one was full and the other I haven’t been able to get through to despite leaving messages.

Thanks in advance 🙂

My go to recommendation for a rusty rider wanting to get their mojo back is to visit Cannock Chase Trekking Centre. I’ve been that nervous rusty rider. CCTC is an easy hour’s run from Shrewsbury, it’s worth the trip, it’s a little further for me.

They have a wide range of over 40 horses to suit all abilities from steady neddies up to whizzier ones. They do faster 2 hour morning rides and steadier 2 hour ‘mixed ability’ afternoon rides in which you can choose not to canter, the ride will split off into two to accommodate this. It’s all fabulous off road riding on the Chase.

They don’t do lessons for adults, though. But they will take a lot of care to partner you with the right horse.

The horse in my avatar is a CCTC boy, Jake.
