Riding in the cold!

Not for riding but yesterday had on thermal top, baselayer, hoodie, padded long coat, thermal musto snug jods under other jods. Was snuggly. Do a lot of outside work whilst at the shop and I am always cold.

I'm wearing a cotton shirt, two thin fleeces, a winter-weight neck warmer, knee-length mountaineering socks, tights and leggings, a Puffa jacket, fingerless gloves and a woolly watch cap. I am in my bunk, under a duvet, and two faux-fur rugs. My secret weapon (also in the bunk, wedged in next to me and emitting a rhythmic snore) is Madam Fatty Chatty Carrie Catty! She is better than a hot water bottle as she doesn't get cold!

My Equidry covering my legs really helped this weekend, it’s the first time I’ve worn a long coat and I won’t be going back to short coats for hacks! I feel the cold but with a base layer, thick musto fleece, wool ear warmers, base layer leggings and jods i was toasty. I have to ride in this much clothing as if I’m cold i get so stiff and in loads of pain

Used to love feeling cocooned in the cold whilst hacking but used to feel too hot schooling in anything but a t shirt!

Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone have any recommendations on winter/lined/thermal breeches that do not have silicone/sticky patches?! I can't seem to find any other than some expensive Pikeurs 😫

I think the sudden drop in temperature is what gets us. Yesterday morning was 15 degrees. Today was minus 3. I haven't felt cold once since being my Equidry all-rounder. Great for riding in as it covers your legs.
I used to have a waterproof padded Velcro closing all over thing, no idea where I got it from or where it went, but having my legs covered was very helpful.

Get yourself a good warm base layer Once you've got that you'll find you don't need so many layers to keep warm. Put your sealskins gloves on & your hands should be ok. If there is any chance of rain you must put a waterproof coat on. Don't bother with 'shower proof as they ae a waste of time. If you get wet you'll freeze..

On top a baselayer, tshirt & then jumper with gilet on top. Heatholders leggings under riding tights with chaps if it's super cold. thin compression socks with thermal socks over the top.
Marks & Spencers do ace thermal legging & socks.
Earwarmers on my skullcap.
Mark Todd fleece thinsulate leather gloves for riding.

I’ve got some Musto snugs which are at least 10 years old now and they are lovely. They weren’t cheap but weren’t as pricey as Pikeurs, but I can’t seem to find somewhere stocking them anymore. They are still listed on Hope Valley Saddlery for £95 but out of stock so they are presumably still around.

Does my nut in that everything has got sticky bits/silicone on now!

I have a lovely pair of Ariat winter breeches. They are water and wind resistant and lined with fleece. Suede patches. Given to me by a friend so not sure on price.

Have kept me toasty warm the last few days!

Also, I've been putting my rain legs on over the top of my breeches even when it's dry as an extra layer.

From January onwards when it's very cold, I have some warm winter full chaps given to me by a lovely HHOer. 😊
