Riding in the dark- right or wrong?

I can personally understand your point of view. Luckilly last winter i had the luxuary of red ways form the yard that were lit to ride around in the dark (my horse wont be schooled and only hacks and they had to stay in for a month as the grazing plan wa awful) It sounds like you did all the right things.

I have ridden in the dark on lit roads and with light etc on me and my horse!

It is sadly dangerous enough to ride on the roads in daylight let alone the increased dangers of doing it when it is dull or dark.

My advice to you is that if you need to excercise your horse after night fall then I would suggest that you temporarily move your horse to another yards that has an indoor arena, floodlight menage or off road riding such as fields or gallops.

The tragedy of it all is that cars are more powerfull, travel at higher speeds and are very much quieter (so one can't hear them approaching from the rear) than they used to be so us horseriders are put at a disadvantage. Todays motorists seem far more aggresive, wound up and impatient.

I would just not want to risk my horse being involved in an accident.

Riding in daylight is dangerous enough, but at least with hi viz there is every chance a motorist can see you. I am afraid that riding in the dark is just not safe, for you, your horse, your husband and any motorists who will not be expecting to see a horse being ridden on the road in the dark. Please don't do it.

I'm lucky in that I have flexi time but I still ride at 7am every day, after walking the dogs and mucking out

. I wouldnt ride in the dark-ever, not with all the flashing lights I could fit on I'm afraid. are there any farm tracks if you must ride at that time?
