Ok so I am determined not to miss my Saturday ride tomorrow as I hardly see him in the evenings during the week... does anyone ride in the snow and if so how do you do it safely? I have two menages and gallops where I am..... are they safe to ride on?

depends on the covering and surfaces tbh. It can very easily ball in their feet and then is very dangerous I will ber giving mine some time off till it clears up

I have just come in from riding in the snow

You'll probably have to do something to stop the snow balling, and be sure the surface under is safe- Our arena isn't as it freezes 'lumpy'.

How do you stop the snow from balling? Surely horses that live out cope with it and they cope with it in colder climates so there must be a way to make it work... don't want to hurt him but going away for three weeks on Sunday so desperate to have a last ride!!

Stockholm tar, baby oil, vaseline, anything greasy helps to be honest but not for long. Mine are barefoot so it doesn't ball and if it does, it comes out in a couple of strides.

People were suggesting vaseline, stockholm tar or axle grease applied on the cleaned soles and all round the insides of the hooves to stop snow balling. If your horse is unshod, you don't have the problem anyway.

it does not ball as badly in the fields as they are not compacting the same bit of snow - changing it to ice but it is still a concern for those living out, unshod horses are normally fine

I'm going to play it by ear but with the yard having kept everything in and the school was frozen solid last night even before it snowed it may be that going across the fields will be the safest option to give him a leg stretch.

There is a grass path from the yard leading to the next farm so I will try that carefully and see how the tracks look from there.
