Riding mare with foal at foot?

I can't begin to comprehend why on earth people would risk this anywhere near a road. Surely it's hugely dangerous not just for the foal but for other road users.

Anyway, no, I'd never ride a mare with a foal at foot.

The foal was being led, not loose and it was 23 years ago in a rural area so not much traffic. My foal loved going out with her mum.

What kind of monster thinks you should ride a horse who’s recently given birth or is feeding? Christ. Would a woman like to do a fun run the day after? Same thing. Psychopaths some people are just nasty.

What a lovely comment to bump a 9 yr old thread 🤔🙄

Fact, not all in foal or those with foals at foot mares are equal, not all are out grazing in lovely fields with other mares and foals.

Sorry apparently the foal is 2 weeks old, and the OP states that she was back riding 2 weeks after she gave birth....
Maybe op was back riding after two weeks. Her choice to ride, but then she is not a horse, who is not only nursing a young foal , but also expected to carry a rider.
I have bred several foals over many years, let them do one job at a time. After all, even humans have a right maternity leave !.

I think it’s fine with an older foal who’s less dependant on the mare / physically able to keep up. Defo not okay a few days after - regardless of the poor foal, think of the mare!

It’s very different but I usually ride my cob alongside he’s (psycho) companion in the turnout. Usually me, schooling my gelding, while my companion runs laps around us, chases us, and acts absolutely ridiculously. Honestly brilliant desensitisation for my ridden horse though - dressage arenas have never been easier and he doesn’t spook when other horses do unless he’s genuinely afraid of said spooky thing! Also fab for the companion that I (might) grow a backbone and break one day (he’s only been backed to date 🙈) as he sees the other horse be saddled / ridden lol

I’ve never ridden a mare with a foal at foot, but last summer I rode two mares with young foals who were kept with other foals in a pen, waiting for their mum to return from the hack. The mares had only just been brought back into work (they were trekking horses -one Icelandic in Denmark and a Fjord in Norway) and they seemed keen and forward to ride. I’m not planning to ride with a foal at foot once it’s born, I’ll leave the two to enjoy maternity leave for a good few months, but if I had the right setup and the mare was already fit I might have been tempted.
