Do you ride on Christmas Day, or is it a day off for your horses?

At my old livery yard we used to go out en-mass for a hack (weather permitting) and when we got back the YO would have mulled wine and mince pies ready for us. Great way to start the day! Think I will miss it this year.

So anyone else out there got any Christmas riding traditions?

A x

yep i will be riding xmas day :)

it means java can try his new tendon boots, his new sheepskin half pad and his lovely new john whitaker velvet saddle cloth all with our new pessoa legacy xp3 saddle although he already has that:D

I take my little girl on foot down to my dads on her pony its half hour hack away then she stands on the garden path eating sweets on him while the family feed the pony carrots. Hes usually covered in tinsel. By the time shes done that and we get back its usually bout time for a shower then dinner is ready.:)

When I lived in Dorset I always used to have a lovely hack along Weymouth beach, it was the only day where there were not many people on roads or the beach.

Would have gone out this year in the woods around my new yard but it's so frozen now I don't think I will be able to ride for a long time :(

Love that picture!!!

This is my first horsey Christmas, and as my horse came with tack, rugs and reindeer antlers I feel it would be rude not to ride on Christmas day, weather and turkey permitting!

Agree great picture, love the horses christmas hats!

I will probably ride christmas day, gets me out of the house for a bit which is always a bonus, also I normally wake up early so much better to go for a ride early than to have to wait around for everyone else to get up so we can open presents. :)

On my old yard we had a mass yard ride, there was normally about 15 of us, and we hacked round to my house where my mum and dad made everyone cups of tea, hot chocolate, mulled wine, mince pies, short bread, mince pies, chocolate log, polos and carrots! It was only about a 15/20 mins ride from the yard and worked really well. All the neighbours use to come out and say hello.

2yr ago we moved yards and me and my sisters (there are 4 of us) hacked round to my sisters boyfriends house and they made us bacon sandwiches. Last year we didnt go for a ride because it was too frozen, all the lanes were icey so the horses had a day off. Not sure what the plan is for this year yet!

me stuffing my face with short bread! :-)

This is my first xmas day as a horsey mam.... my hubby is away offshore so if the snow goes i will hack out early..... just me and my boy..... unless anyone at the yard wants to join us..... followed by a wee bucks fizz afterwards....
Praying for dry roads.....

I always try - although in 9 years of having her I've managed to ride Christmas day 3 times now.
The plan this year is to ride out early (weather permitting) then off to the inlaws for dinner.
Year before last I took her off down the beach - its the only day the roads are quiet enough for us to go down there alone.

Will definitely try and hack out, weather depending. I'll drag dad along with me so he can walk the dogs so we keep out the way of mum making the dinner :D

used to in years gone by and when daughter was younger we went out on christmas day all tinselled up - sadly no now but i will stand and sing "we wish you a merry christmas to my nags on day - they will stand there thinking " ok ok stop wailing and feed me " lol love christmas, ponies and tinsel at christmas - got lovely pic of daughter and pony tinselled and stopped by random local newspaper photographer was in local paper and was lovely :)

A few years back a friend and I hacked to the beach on Christmas morning and it was fantastic; my mum was working till 3pm and dad/brother were at church so I would have been home on my own... so thought what the hell and arranged a beach hack. We set off really early and passed through one village just as everyone was opening their presents, kids were outside playing, was lovely.

This year I'm doing the horses Christmas morning but aiming to get them sorted early so I can go home and spend the day with the family as this is the first christmas in years that my mum has not had to work :)

at my old yard me, the yard owner and another livery would go for a hack on x-mas day. poor horses got glitter in their tails and covered in tinsel haha poor things

When I was much younger we ( the other liveries) used to have a Christmas morning race ! the set aside field was primed for it and we used to practise our 'race positions' in the weeks run up to Christmas - the actually morning was always 11am start and we used to have this complete 'belt up' the field - a fantastic laugh then a cool off and back down to the yard for mince pies and mulled wine - ( yes we were that young!) fab - I did this ofr about 7 christmas mornings and it really brought a crowd out and all the villagers used to get into the mood as well ! It was brilliant - now I settle for a quiet hack for about 5 hours - Yes I'm on my own and LOVE IT !!!

This is my first Christmas as a horse owner and am massively excited about the prospect of riding Christmas day. We always used to go for a walk in the morning to get ourselves nice and hungry for dinner, so now i'm going for a ride instead. Provided the ice rink surrounding our entire yard decides to thaw in time!
