Hello friends, and Merry Christmas to you!

I am after a bit of advice really.

I have never hunted before, but have often thought that once I got back in the saddle, this would be a brilliant way to see some of the countryside in company, and would also give me a bit of encouragement to better my riding. Lessons and schooling hacks will only go so far.

i was just wondering if there was ever a possibility to 'borrow' a seasoned hunter for first timers like myself? I am probably going to miss this season, because I will be travelling a lot with work until about April. But i am planning on dedicating my free time over the summer to some serious riding, lessons etc.

Any advice would be gratefully received. I used to loan an old hunter, and we jumped a couple of foot when he was fit, but he has now retired, and as such I am pony-less. I wont be committing to buying my own just yet (work related) but I wouldnt rule out a share/part-loan in the future.

many thanks

Quite a few people in my area (Northants) look for someone to share their horses to hunt in the week so they can hunt at the weekend. They seems to be a lot more expensive than a "normal" share though!

Could you look to borrow a hireling?

That sounds like I could effectively hire a ride for the day? Is that right? Do most hunts do that?

I will either be in the South Wilts and Dorset area or the Wilton....

I think you'd have to ask people in the know who has hirelings, as good quality hunters for hire are hard come by. My friend hired a horse to hunt that was a scatty little madam, returned it at the end of the day and was asked how the horse went, she's never been hunting before!!!!

Ohhh.....ok! I am not really a novice, but in the field, Id certainly be out of my comfort zone! Ill make further enquiries and see if I can find advice elsewhere.

Thanks for your replies! :)
