Okay, here goes, be nice!

i have always been told that when jumping, your lower leg should pretty much stay still, obviously this may be hard jumping huge fences but the bottom of your foot should still be facing the ground and your leg on/near the girth.

But ive noticed more and more, particluarly showjumpers, that their lower leg is almost in line with the saddle with their spurs almost under it half a mile back.

Now i am NOT claiming to be a pro in riding and how to ride correctly, its just that ive always been taught to keep lower leg still, yet i see so many peoples legs way back.

Am i just talking rubbish? :p:o

Wow! I hope that was a joke!

I'm no jumping expert.

But the question seemed very genuine so I hope it gets some kind answers!

Which riders are these?

Yes it should stay still, but yes it does tend to slip back when people are jumping round 1.60s.

It is a genuine question.

No rider in particular, just in general. Just looking at a few photos in HH and on the internet and couldnt help but notice.

Im nor trying to sound insulting or anything as no way could i do their job but it just came to my attention

I think it's because when you're jumping 1.60m courses, at the point of take off the horse is pretty much vertical so to be in the correct place your leg has to be in this position and so it stays there rather than swinging wildly over the fence?

If you search, there's a post somewhere in comp riders about it that was very informative!
