I read this too and to me it sounds like he's been bought a good pony that he has learnt on.
No different to any other kid that is started early, it just depends if you get a good pony!

We've all seen this before, a youngster sitting on a good pony that knows it's job. Aim the pony & he'll do the rest. Good Luck to the kid, lets hope he continues to enjoy riding & is doing it for himself not for his Dad

According to Google he showed lead line at local shows last year. . .

And the sponsorship is not exactly what you'd think - one firm gave them a small lump sum and the other pledged £300 a year for the next ten years.

Seems a cute kid with supportive parents and perhaps a little ahead of the curve but mostly it's a cute "filler" piece for the papers and fantastic publicity value for money for the sponsors. Someone was thinking.

But if its fantastic publicity for the sponsors, I think they'd have preferred a mention in the Sun ! If their names aren't mentioned, then its not publicity for them, is it?

As it is, there's no mention of what he does (though I would have guessed showing at that age, as he IS a cute little kid and its a gorgeous pony). i hope he does well, but calling him a "prodigy" is typical media fluff.

interesting comment below the daily mail article

"A child of this age/size should not be riding a horse unaided - whether he has the ability or not.

This is an accident waiting to happen.

People riding full stop is an accident waiting to happen, its not a safe sport.
Sure his parents are looking after him and doing everything possable to prevent injury.

It really isnt "special " news is it thought ? I mean just alot of over blown publicity .

My old boss has 2 sons who are winning all over country , the amount of winnings they have is unreal. and they are both under 12 ..They started winning when they where just 5 years old and this was bigger competitions .

Although they have great ponies , they are both cracking little riders .

Just alittle bit of info on him and his many wins .

The final presentation of the evening was made to the leading rider of the show. This presentation was made to one of the youngest competitors at the event, Nathan Evans, on Princess Judy, Nathan was presented with his prize, a Kingsland Leisure Jacket.

Agree that there are quite a few children who are proficient at that age - saw a little five year old jumping at a show at the weekend and she was so professional-looking it was untrue!

I know a 5yo that jumps 3'3 I think that puts this kids achievements into the shade.
I know his trainer and she said the child can barely string a sensible sentence together yet has an incredible pony and amazing balance combined with fearlessness.

His brother is 9yo and jumps 4'2 which is more scary!

Think the parents have done a great PR job on this but its good to see horseriding on the agenda and I am sure more incredible kids will come out of the woodwork.

I must admit, at that age you are totally reliant on the good nature of the pony, as a child of 4 will not be strong enough (or mentally mature enough) to be able to get himself out of trouble, particularly if there are other horses and ponies around.

Good on him, but ditto a few others - not really hard to achive! My RI has had a 4yr old kid go from never been on a pony to being able to jump over 2ft in 6 months. It can be done as kids are fearless, they like fun, and they absorb more - so of course they will learn quickly.
Also, was Robert Whitaker not jumping like 3ft 6 ish at 8yr old?? I seem to remember an article on that years ago.

But also those comments from the readers - bet their kids stay in and play PS3 in case they break an arm falling off a scooter.
