I am trying to find a decent riding school withing a 45min drive of stockport, any suggestions? I though john shaw's may be ok but they are very into jumping which i am not! I really want a decent instructor for one to one sessions.

Stay away from Glen Jakes in Stockport at all costs!! Sorry not much help to recommend you somewhere but at least I can advise where to avoid!

Redredruby i rode there years ago and they put me on a 17.3hh i am 5'3 and proceeded to laugh at me struggling to mount! Prehaps its changed hands and improved?

Hi try Castle View Equestrian (type into google), in Lancashire. Lovely horses. Only dressage lessons though. And the instructer specilises in Classical Dressage. But a very friendly yard and high qualitity teaching :)

What about Mobberley Riding School Newton Hall Lane Mobberley? Very good facilities with indoor schools and outdoor arena.

It would take about half an hour from Stockport coming on the motorway. Wilmslow turn.

Lowton riding centre too far for you? Lovely horses and good instruction, though don't jump really. Plenty of different types of horses though, and all of them are very well schooled.

A second recommendation for Lowton Riding Centre, I rode there a few years back and the horses are well schooled and the instruction is great :) only about 40 mins from Stockport I would think!

Abi at John Shaw's does do flat/dressage only lessons and sometimes takes a lorry load of people over to Aintree to compete in unaffiliated dressage. The thing I always liked about John's was the quality of the horses because they're all for sale so not old riding school plods (which was a plus for me but of course that's exactly what some people are looking for).

This was the big plus for me to, i feel sorry for riding school horses that have been doing the same lessons day after day for years! I might book a lesson with Abi as the only thing that put me off was the jumping aspect!

Thanks all loads of great suggestions much appreciated :D

Why not Cheshire Riding School in Comberbach?

I learnt to ride there many years ago, I am also currently a livery on their livery stables and I can certainly vouch for their horses and method of teaching. The yard has EXCELLENT facilities, the staff are amazing and the horses are really well taken care of. I say all of this because it's true, there aren't enough riding schools out there who take great care of their school horses but CRS does, they have routine health/back/teeth checks and all tack is custom made for the horses (so no bad backs) and they have horses to suit EVERY level of rider. They really are fantastic, also if you fancy there is a huge farm ride which goes through the Cheshire countryside and you can have escorted hacks (in groups or private- your choice!).
I personally really rate them, they are great, they have everything you could ever want in a riding school and like I keep saying, the horses are healthy and happy! My OH just recently learnt to ride there so I can reccomend them from a clients point of view.
*I just read that it is for your child, they teach tons of children and host a range of pony days and rallies, also they give you the option to join the pony club (on one of their ponies) and partake in a range of different activities and pony club games- it's great fun. I was desperate to join in their last pony days, the kids had a blast!! :D
Here is their website if you are interested- also the pricing is very reasonable!

I highly recommend Willington Hall Riding Centre, near Tarporley. It's a full up 45 minutes from Stockport but it's well worth the journey. I've ridden there for 12 years and would never go anywhere else. Brilliant instructors, great horses, lovely yard. Many horses go out and compete so they are not typical riding school plods :) I don't know about any of the other suggestions - I've never been :P

I went on a lovely gallopy hack there last year, rode a lovely big ginge called Minty.

CobMum, your best bet would probably be IMO Butterlands at Biddulph (10mins the other side of Macclesfield) again all the horses have evented and are gorgeous
xx

Wow so many places i have never heard off, thank you all so much. I really want a good flatwork instructor to teach me about balance, improving transitions and classical schooling.
