I still dont understand your objection. A tree surgeon came to our house today. It cost us £5 for him to park. Plus we live in an area where few houses have garages or off street parking. We have to pay about £140 p.a. to park outside our house.

Because outside of council owned land, or local residential laws, it’s somewhat uncommon to have to pay to park at a business they’re already paying to use the services of in the sports/leisure industry at least!

It is a good idea to compare what a riding lesson is compared to other sports and pastimes.

Golf lesson, tennis lesson, Singing lesson.?

How much is going to a football or ruby match? Say Premier League to watch a match for 1 1/2 hours.

I have no idea of any of the above.

Twickenham for an England men's rugby union international is about £130 for a premium ticket for 80mins plus extra time. I get your point re comparing other sports (watching England play for 80mins is the same price as me having a private lesson for 45 minutes), however the difference is Twickenham can seat 82000 people in one go. Even with an average of £100 a ticket, that's £8.2 million made by ONE match. They'll host roughly ten internationals a year, so that's £82 mil before even considering what they make through other matches, hospitality etc.

NO riding school comes close to those figures in terms of income versus day to day running costs. Your average tennis club (maybe more on grass to a point, unless it's the All England Club) won't have the maintenance and running costs a riding school does, a singing lesson can be done anywhere really, so again limited costs.

Golf is possibly the only sport that would be similar in terms of what you need to do/pay to manage the facilities, but even then the only thing you need to care for is the grass. You don't have to feed the golf balls or flags.

Yes, I get that completely. I think that we undervalue riding lessons because we don't realise what other people pay for their sport.

But learning to play rugby costs a fraction of what it costs to watch an international match, which is what the comparison should be.

Sports that are more expensive per hour than riding? Skiing, shooting, sailing maybe? Though my local decent clay pigeon shoot is £180 for a two hour private lesson including gun hire, cartridges and clays - £90 an hour - still better value for money than my 45 min private riding lesson...

OH has paid £175 for a golf lesson but his more regular lessons are £75. Plus the four figure annual membership ...

Dog training around here is about £80 a session but I have friends that have paid three figures for a session.

We also have sailors in the family - so again, not a cheap sport. They pay four figures a year just to keep the boat tied in a harbour.

For value for money with the associated costs I don't think horse riding lessons are outrageous at all.

Part of the problem is, I think, for a family that say have a child doing football training once a week and the other kid wants to ride £60- 80 for a horse riding lesson seems a lot in comparison (and is, to be fair for many when juggling household bugets) without appreciating the costs of running horses & a horse business.

I'm not getting the comparisons between an hours lesson at your local riding school and watching England play rugby at Twickenham or going to watch my beloved Arsenal at the Emirates. 🤷‍♀️

You're comparing people at the lower levels of a fairly niche sport having a standard lesson, to watching elite sportsmen at the very top level of their respective games, play competitively for 80 to 90 minutes.

Two completely and utterly different things.

What the riding school near me offers. I was gonna book a lesson but realistically regardless of prices I need to save me money
