Can anyone recommend any good riding schools with patient instructors who can get square pegs to fit in round holes? I'm trying to persuade my non-horsey city-loving Japanese girlfriend to take up riding.

I'm looking a for a good riding school on the western side of the M25 (from the M3 to the M1 I guess) as we are about to move from the Kingston area to closer to Watford in a month or two.

She has ridden once, two years ago when we went on a small pony trek through the new forest and she really enjoyed it, even though her legs were up in the air like a pair of wings.

;-)

Laris Farm in Chobham, Surrey i think is the best riding school in Surrey and Hampshire. I spent ages searching for a decent school and none of them came close to this one. As with all riding schools i think you get a better one to one in the week rather than the weekend. Hope that has helped.

I would go for a private riding instructor with schoolmaster... much better progress.

Laris Farm is nice and fun, went there for a while, but they seem to have limited horses and progress was generally a bit on the slow side.

Went to Laris for a while. Used to help out at weekends etc. When I first went there they didn't have the simulator. Now however, (unless they have changed it since I left) all new clients are assessed on the simulator until they have a balanced position etc etc. I found they always had a lack of larger ponies/small horses however that may well of changed. There is good hacking when they do take groups out as it is almost straight onto Chobham Common.

Edited to say after 3 years there my riding had improved alot however once at the sort of 'experienced' riders type stage progress is slow and I then went onto loaning a pony and now I have an ex racer and I have learnt so much from having him. But obv. if you are only at the persuading stage this wont be a problem! They do have some lovley horses that I got to know well.

I have heard good reports about South Medburn, which is near to Radlett, close to Watford - have a look at their website. I do think you need to commit to a set number of lessons though.... Rose Hall Farm, mentioned above may be a bit more relaxed! Good luck, hope she enjoys!
