I don't come on here very often, so i hope i have done this right and have put it in the correct forum. Basically it has been a fair while since i have ridden properly, last had lessons when i was about 12 and i am now 23. Although i have ridden friends horses very occassionally i now want to get back into the whole thing.

So i am looking for a riding school in the Essex area, Basildon, Wickford, Rayleigh area, possibly a little further out like Westcliff if there is a brilliant riding school somewhere. Anyone have an recommendations? Looking at re-honing my skills and learning to jump, which is something i have never done. Many thanks

Have a look at the BHS web site as they may have some schools listed on there, I think it would be better if you got a personal recommendation though, good luck

I haven't yet, thought i would do some research and see if there were any recommendations. Just want to find somewhere that teaches to a good standard, with some nice horses etc.. The only ones i know of in the area are Runningwell EC, Rawreth EC and i have been to Longwood to watch the show jumping, however i wasn't aware they still carried out lessons - that was where my dad learnt to ride as a child but i am sure the instructors there now are not the same ones that were there when he used to ride!

Longwood dont have a riding school...the ones i can think of Park Lane riding school in Wickford / Eastminster in Elm Park, romford / Colmar Farm in Brentwood / Belfairs in Leigh On Sea / Aldborough Hall is a bit further nr Ilford. The only one i would avoid is Bretons at Romford but i think thats closed down recently anyway.

There used to be a riding school at Longwood as I had lessons there about 5yrs ago, I then rode at Park Lane riding school in Ramsden Heath nr Billericay and I really liked it there although I understand its now changed hands, but it is supposed to be better so maybe worth a look.

There are some lovely ones in your end of the woods, but the top one for me is Runningwell, the horses receive better care than any other riding school, the yard is spotless, instructors and other riders are lovely and the tuition is almost always exemplary - sometimes I find lessons a bit too simplified. (I've been & worked in nearly all), the only one that comes close to it is Rawreth ec. I wouldn't recommend Longwood as they don't distribute the horses correctly (used to put beginners on rearers and learning canters and bolters and broncos) Shopland has gone really downhill. Burches was always great for hacking and jump lessons (when weather permitted).

Burches riding school in Benfleet is where I used to ride/work. It's good, and was BHS approved when I was there about 3 years ago, not sure about now. Can give the no. if you want to PM me.
