Hello,

I am seeking some advice for a decent riding school that is close to London with a greater emphasis on show jumping? I have had a break for the last 2 years and would love to get back into the sport but before jumping straight into either horse ownership or sharing, I need to have quite a few lessons first.

There are a lot of riding schools near London but they seem very much to cater for the beginner market. Would be good if the school was relatively close to public transport.

I would be grateful for any recommendations :)

Wildwoods Riding Centre in Surrey. Walkable from Tadworth Station. Have lots of Jumping horses as they hold Stage 3 exams where horses have to be able to jump 3'3". Many will jump higher.

Have a look on the BHS website and see if any of the centers offering stage 3 might be able to help. As well as Wildwoods - which might be a problem to get to by public transport - there is Kingston Riding Centre, Berkshire Riding Centre and a couple in North London. The problem is a mixed insurance / welfare one and it is one thing to have horses for stage 3 pupils - who by definition have already done stages 1 and 2 - and letting someone they do not yet know jump at any height.

Otherwise you could head for Wellington or Talland - both a way out of London but both with a strong competition emphasis.

How far are you willing to travel? My instructor has about 5 horses she teaches on, all the horses are very good and able and she is excellent. She only caters for those that can already ride and has helped me massively with my jumping (we jump 90cm-1m in lessons - very rare to find riding schools where you can do that around here!). She is about a 50min train ride from Liverpool street station and the girls on the yard pick you up and drop you off at the train station. Let me know if you want more details.

Hello all,

Thank you for your suggestions. I will definately take a look at Wildwoods, Kings Oak, Wellington & Talland. Unfortunately Kingston Riding School do not offer what I am looking for (in regards for longer-term lessons, short-term they would be fine).

Daydreamer, I have PM'd you :)

I was wondering if you would let me know how to get in contact with your instructor, I've been riding at the same yard for almost 5 years now and love it, however I am looking for somewhere where I can do a more advanced lesson in just jumping once a month as well as continuing at my current yard. I saw your reply to someone else's question and this yard seems perfect. If you wouldn't mind please may you pass on to me a website/phone number&name of your instructor or an email address that I can get in contact with them with,
