riding through bone spavin advice please

Hello horse diagnosed with above last summer had two injections which didn't really work. Told to work on bute in Sept but just turfed him out for winter on two bute a day and very lightly hacked him, came sound and I thought his hock had fused, but have started to get him fit for the summer and he is lame again with sore back. Vet has advised to work on bute but I really don't want to. Worried about his back, he chews stable furiously when i put his saddle on and I hate the way his leg twists when he moves and muscle loss on one side, must be putting strain on the rest of him. Know work is the quickest way to fuse but would appreciate other opinions on just leaving him alone till it rights its self, although this is problematic has he got laminitis last year due to been of work (and of course too much grass). Any opinions/experiences ?
 
My horse had surgery 11 weeks ago for the same condition.I can talk you through the process regarding surgery but it is expensive .There was a article a few weeks ago I think it was from fredthoroughbred not positive he put his horse out to pasture and the fusing took place naturally.M vet told me it can take up to two years thats why I went the surgery route.I would be happy too discuss with you if you want any info.
 
OH's horse was diagnosed with bone spavin a couple of years ago, rode through it on bute (hacking in walk for months) but what really helped was having treatment from an osteopath & farrier put pads in his heels to change his foot alignment.

He came sound for a year but has now gone lame again, vets say it is not the spavin but they are not sure what it is, may be arthritis in the stifle now.

Anyway it would be worth getting your horse looked at by an osteopath (who treats any structural imbalance caused by the spavin) and possibly a physio too (for the sore back muscles). Best not to leave it and ride through as the muscle wastage won't get any better as it is showing that he is compensating somewhere else.
 
Hello Thank you for replies everyone. Hello Cellie remember me we have posted loads about bone spavins overreaching and barefoot for horses with crap feet who don't hold shoes. Anyway horse loads better looked hideous on Friday hence feeling upset and posting this post but two days on bute and he is loads better. Looks 99% sound, didn't object to saddle when i rode him just now and he felt fab pushing from hocks and working straight, so hopefully i will be able to rebuild his muscle. Looks like I just took him of his bute to early. Thanks again for advice.

yes I do remember.Glad he is feeling better.We are making progress as well .One more week of walking then 4 weeks of trot .Hes not had any danilon/bute seems really comfortable and is walking so much better.All the time we thought he was lazy he was probably really uncomfortable.
RE poor feet.Ive just put ollie on top spec balancer it has a really good reputation for improving hooves the hoof supplement is inc.in the balancer.Have a look online .I gave them a ring really helpful company.Ill let you know if there is a major improvement but his feet are looking good after having 8 weeks with no shoes on.
 
Hi Samuel horse .Still waiting on insurance had to appeal doesnt look to positive but I will go to ombudsman if necessary.Ollie is doing well I can start trotting next week hes getting bit bored just walking so am I .I have the vet back in 5 weeks for starting canter work and check him on the lunge for lameness workout.Ill keep you posted hope all is well with your boy.J
