So we finally did it....Saturday first time up ever , after my broken shoulder, fractured knee, broken ankle etc etc etc and him coming back from his casting and all the injuries..ruddy horrific time but hey ho.

He was a dream light to the touch, calm (despite the mare he is sharing a paddock with charging up and down screaming at him!) and very comfortable.

Pics were taken on Sunday....started off on the lunge just to get comfortable and at ease....then off on my own....only walking at mo to ease both him and me in very gently..His leg is fine not in the slightest unsound....well apart from when we went to go for a walk outside the school and doofus promptly managed to get a sharp stick stuck in his wound prompting him standing on 3 legs and me having to make a rather ungainly dismount...however he stayed totally unflapped allowing me to get off pull out the aforesaid stick at which point he realised he was not dying and walked off normally (rolling eyes smiley anyone!)

So in my year off every riding muscle I have ever had has turned to flab

YEY! you both look great, especially since everytime i see you post i think of those pictures from when he got cast. You would never know now.

Sounds like he's taking it all in his stride.

Well done you, the first step is always the hardest, but that's behind you now!

On another note, is that a Micklem Multibridle I see on your horse, I've been really interested in these and wondered what you thought about them?

Hi Cluny no not a Micklem it is called a Kaptoom (better pic below) and is a sort of very lightweight hybrid of a lunge cavesson and bridle. I live in Holland and have had my lad trained by an Emiel Voest Instructor and the Kaptoom is used for lunge work, double lunging, in hand work and with the addittion of a separate bit attachement (I use a leather bit) and a pair of snazzy reins that clip onto the bit rings it becomes a bridle. THe last pic shows him when he was first backed and Astrid was using both the reins on the Leather bit and another rein on the cavesson so the absolute minimum of pressure was put on his mouth.....I now only use the leather clip on reins on the bit rings.

It is very lightweight and means you can go from working in hand or lunging to riding without having to either have ten tons of kit on or swop kit over.

The leather bit is a straight bit and is very very mild....you simply rinse it before and after use and once a month soak it in Sunflower oil overnight.

For your interest I have put the web site of both my Trainer Astrid and also the mail Emiel Voest Website.....In Dutch but bable Fish makes it just about understandable
