Has anyone ever done this? Im not talking about some mad idiot of a horse, i would like to ride my 8 year old cob that only goes at a snails pace. Hubby isnt keen on the idea

mmmm I've already warned my boyfriend that if it ever happened there's no way I'm giving up!

my friend rode her horse up until 8 months but i guess it's best on a saner horse.....see how you get on and take it slowlyx

Never affected me but I know someone who was hunting until 3 days before labour! (worked in Midwifery at the time) saw her out hunting just over a wekk afterwards!

Personally, I'm not sure if I would ride or not - OH could always ride mine (that's if he didn't have a heart attack from the shock!)

Havent rode for a few days and im finding myself getting all jealous seeing friends ride them for me. Got appointment with midwife next wednesday so might wait until then and mention it to her.

Angel was named that for a reason, she is an angel. Her only bad quirk is that she will give a wee skip if you smack her with a crop, but i never use a crop on her, only hubby does.

I'm 4 months and still riding and jumping! we're off to Norton Heath tonight! My doctor said to carry on as long as I feel comfortable! I even did Gymkhana Games on him at the weekend, at the show I organised at our yard!

I think it depends on alot of things. My horse is 16.0h TB and he is a good boy! I'm not jumping silly heights, just up to about 2.6ft/2.9ft. Hubby is OK at the moment, but I imagine as I get bigger he'll have something to say! My parents are fine surprisingly enough, as my mum said 'I've done it for so long now, I should just be able to cary on as much as normal'. Friend of mine rode the morning she gave birth - only in the school I might add as her horse was a bit excitable to hack out!

its good that hubby can still exercise so atleast you won't feel 'guilty' about not riding!

treat it as time to have more relaxed fun (not sure if you school alot) and just enjoy leisurely rides.....it's actually fun sometimes not to go hairing down gallops (well that's what my friend tells me!) x

Even if i got up there and had a wee walk about for a few minutes, i would be ok. Hubby said that he doesnt mind me riding as long as i walk only, infact he said if he rides them, then i can cool them down - awww lol.

Have to say that the hardest this for me is giving up smoking!!

I think it is a very personal choice, but with your history of miscarriages I would seek medical advice before making any decisions.. BTW congratulations on the pregnancy..

i was schooling pointers at 6 months and hacking my 17.1 TB till i was 8 months and she still came out at 9lb 13?
You just need to trust your horse?

How far gone are you? I would def keep riding Rocks as i trust him immensely, but not any of the others! Aslong as your comfortable and have a nice safe horse i dont see a problem.
My friends mum went into labour (with my friend) whilst riding in the school, she was a few days over the due date by that point!! Madness.

Not riding until after appointment next wednesday. Hubby has also took over teaching foalie to lead incase she would kick out

I rode until about 5 months (with Drs agreement) - then only stopped as started to find it difficult getting off and on! Did have a slight scary moment at 4 months when had a silly fall jumping - but I put that down to my balance being affected?!! Took the hint and only hacked after that.
I didnt own up to other half about the fall - just got myself checked out with the Doctor and luckily all was OK.
But just check it out with the Doctor that he is happy for you to continue - its not worth doing anything that will put you or the baby at risk especially this early on.
Congratulations BTW.

I was going to but i had terrible sickness and migranes for first 22 weeks!! TBH i think if you are sensible, have a quiet horse (i only had nutty eventers) its good to carry on as normal.
I wish i had been able to.Im 40 weeks now and am hoping to get back on in 4 weeks but because its been so long i'm a little worried how long its going to take to get back in the swing of things.
It is however important to remember that your OH will not only be concerned about baby, but will now feel protective of you as you will be seen differently by him through your pregnancy.
Good luck, do what feels right for all of you.

With my first i rode up to 6 months before i ran into complications, with the second only up to 3 months because of the problems i had with the first pregnancy.

i rode untill the day i was due but after 6 mths i just did walk as i found trotting quite uncomfortable and my baby was a healthy 10 lbs 6 oz

As a midwife I would receommend that you just listen to your body. If it feels ok go for it but just be sensible. At 6 weeks the fetus is still well down in the pelvis so is well protected by a boney structure. It does start to get difficult getting on and off later in the pregnancy but if a gentle hack suits you on a sensible horse then clincally there is no reason why you shouldn't.

I rode up til 5 months with the first and 7 months with the second, but it was only happy hacking. I did actually fall off second time at about 8 weeks and luckily everything was fine. I am now expecting baby number 3, but have had to stop at 4 months because some fool drove into the back of my car and gave me whiplash!! I would have continued as long as possible had this not happened. I don't know if it's related, but I had a much easier labour second time round when I rode longer!?!

Like keisha its up to the person , everyone is different, For me I rode with my first up until 7 mths and that was only walking and some light hacking , with my second I had to stop at 13 wks as I started to bleed when I went to a show, I had just entered into the class when I thought I wet myself, went to the toilet and realised I was drenched in blood ( sorry ) Was taken straight to the hospital with hubbie and was in hospital for 3 days until I eventually stopped bleeding , the little blighter was doing somersaults when I was scanned and hes now 2 yrs old .

So just be sensible and listen to your body

I've got very firm views on this. If you have a defenceless life inside you, there is no way you should put that life at risk. Any horse can spook, and any rider can fall.

No, i would never ride whilst pregnant.

QR -

I rode my horses while I was pregnant; I guess up to about 8 months, but I did stop riding my lunatic mare at around 6 months.

I also ride my in-foal horses up till a couple of months before they are due. I believe in both cases it keeps your muscles toned and facilitates an easier birth.

Katy I also agree with your views. Whilst people may assume it is safe to ride what they consider as 'safe' horses and continue to ride whilst pregnant they forget the fact that they are accepting the risks not only for them but for their unborn child.
IMO it is too great a risk for both mother and child and also what right do we as mothers have over our unborn child and their safety.
Yes we are the creators of that life along with the father or in some cases sperm donor but a life is a life. The unborn life inside of us is part of us yes but it is also another human life and therefore we don't have the right to take risks with that life.
Any sport or pastime that could potentially harm the unborn child or in some cases kill it should be avoided in my opinion.
Yes by all means take the risk yourself but don't risk a life which does not yet have a voice of its own.

I rode my slightly scatty and exuberant 17.2hh TB up until the day before I had my baby - I just did what felt comfortable, trotting wasnt overly comfortable towards the end but cantering was fine. Id rather run the slim risk of flling off than feel totally miserable for 9 months!! Needless to say my baby got his own pony almost straight away - t can walk clean undernesth my horse
