Riding while pregnant

With my first pregnancy I felt sick every time I rode so stopped. With the 2nd one I carried on until I was about 7 months but only did hacking and flat work.

Well I asked this a couple of weeks ago and the consensus was that it depends how you feel... except I've had my choice taken away from me now. No riding for me because my horse is unrideable, at least for the foreseeable. Then I'll be too fat to ride. Then I'll have a small baby. So no, I won't be riding.

Didn't ride at all as horse was then still only 3 and regularly chucked me off!! Rode pretty quick afterwards though. Jumping on second time out. Before you all say I shouldn't jump an unfit horse I had sent him away for schooling whilst at end of pregnancy!!!!!

I rode my 2 until 7 1/2ish months - I competed dressage and jumped until it was too uncomfortable. I didn't hack because 1 of them is a youngster and the other is a bit silly on the roads. Do whatever you feel comfortable with and don't let other people make you feel bad, whatever you decide x

my new baby is 4 weeks old and i finished riding at 5 months (though even at this point was only hacking and only on occassion my horse is 21 and needs very little work)

the only reason i had to stop is i couldn't get on any more as he is 17.2. with my 1st child (who is now 12) i rode upto 7 months. it is personal preference and i think depends on how you feel, how well you know and trust your horse. a couple of months ago we were at a competetion and a woman was jumping a horse in warm up arena for someone else and was very heavily pregnant - she didn't know the horse and had got on as it was messing its owner around and continued to do the same with her. i personally would not have risked this.

hope your pregnancy goes well - there is light at end of the tunnel i am going to start riding again this weekend!!!

I am planning on having a baby next year. My mare is currently 4 and i would ride her now if pregnant as I trust her - I wouldn't of even considered it on my old 12 yr old SJ though!!
It really is a personal choice. My biggest barier will be convincing my OH i can still ride!!!!

I rode up until the birth with my first child but only in the arena (hacking was a bit of a nightmare in teh Dublin mountains). With my second I had pelvic problems and riding, esp rising trot, was agony! Incidentally, my doctor was very supportive of me continuing to ride, she says too many pregant women sit around, fearful of doing anything.

I'm 5 months pregnant and stopped at 6 weeks but only because I had had a previous miscarriage and needed to be ultra careful. My horse is an angel and I trust him completely but I would never had forgiven myself if something had happened. Its a very individual choice and I hope to be back in the saddle as soon after I've had my baby as poss.

I rode with my son until I was 33 weeks, my bump then got too big and I had put on far too much weight for my 15.2hh TB

. I hacked did a little bit of jumping (until I got too big) and flatwork.
I was back in the saddle a week after giving birth to a 9lb baby!
My second pregnancy sadly the baby died at 20 weeks

however I had ridden again. I did the same as above and also some dressage competitions and some VERY little showjumping classes.
I was back riding again 2 days after his birth.
I am now pregnant again and I plan to carry on just as before, but as this baby is due in February and I will be doing very little over the winter I don't intend to keep on jumping and will just hack and do flatwork to keep my boy ticking over.

I've had my horse 11 years and trust him with my life, but as others have said it really is a personal desicion and if you do choose to ride get ready for people to look at you as if you have just suggested you want to inject yourself with heroin

I rode with both of mine right up until I literally couldn't get on the horse, my midwife told me that if it was something i'd always done then i could continue to do it - so I did - nothing stupid but just hacking, I still mucked out, lugged hay/straw and water etc, both babies were healthy and huge !

Most of all stay safe,

I wouldn't ride whilst pregnant but that is because I am quite a nervous rider and would think I would worry too much to enjoy it. I would be constantly worrying about what if this happened and what if that happened. I'd be a nervous wreck!

Having had several hard falls in the past I know I don't fall softly, always ending up at A&E! Last fall, broken collar bone which I am still recovering from almost 7 months on - often think about riding at all again as don't like the pain!

I would ride til I couldnt get on any more.... but then I have no intention of ever getting pregnant so may not offer the best advice! Mary King competed at 4* while 5 months pregnant!

I rode until i was 36 weeks preganant, just hacking on my lovely pony whi was a total saint. Not sure i would ride Milly while preganant though as she is not quite so reliable just yey - maybe when her schoolin has progressed a bit!

Yep, rode through both my pregnancies on my TB mare who proves to be very sensible. I rode up until the end both times although in second pregnancy I had developed bad back pain in the last couple of weeks of pregnancy and this slowed me down drastically - probably only got on for about 10mins at the time the rest I worked horse from the ground/ in the horse walker...
Did not jump or go to any outings or hacks where she would be potentially going fizzy though and stopped hacking about 6 weeks before due date.
