I'm 22 weeks pregnant & have noticed after riding my pelvis seems stiff/seized up. Plus it hurts to walk too fast.
Am only riding at weekends & only hacking round the local village/yard land. Bearly getting out of walk.

Is there anything (besides giving up riding) I can do to help pelvis?

It's caused by your ligaments slackening off getting ready to accomodate baby. Sorry to say that riding is only going to make it feel worse as bump gets heavier.

As a mum of four I have spent a lot of time out of the saddle nursing a bump which is very frustrating, on the bright side I have horses that lunge and long rein really well, four beautiful children, (well they are now they are asleep) and because I didn't cause myself any damage got back to riding quickly.

I know it's not what you want to hear but it's only for a short while till baby arrives!
Congratulations too!!!

How much riding did you do before you were pregnant. Preganacy and me dont mix well, so wasnt even allowed drive or walk anywhere when i was pregnant, but a friend of mine rode til 8 mths on all 3 kiddies, as she rode a couple of hours every day before hand. Maybe use that elastic support for pregnant women that you can get, it might help. i think mothercare do them. hope it helps!!

it might be Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction in which case it could cause you problems later. Ask your midwife for advice on it and if she thinks that is what it could be. It is really painful and opening your legs too wide (ie horse riding rather than the kind that got you into that situation in the first place :p) can make it more painful. You also need to make sure the delivery midwife is aware of it.

Do you get this pain at other times? Pelvic pain is not uncommon during pregnancy, but for some women it can become very uncomfortable and might need physiotherapy - sooner rather than later. If the pain increases or becomes more frequent, don't ignore it! This website has very useful information on pelvic pain. :)

Hi, I too had pelvic pain whilst pregnant.
Please get checked by your doctor/midwife.
I found out I had that symphysis thingy, which was pretty painful, particularly laying down at night, and whilst getting on and off the horse. Once I was on I was fine and had the deepest seat I ever have.
... BUT, five years on, I am still paying for this as have a rotated pelvis, and am crooked whilst riding. With hindsight, I would not have ridden with this condition, and would not have got back on so soon after, as I don't think this helped at all.
Its frustrating not to ride, but its only for a few months, you have years more to get back on!!!

Sounds like your body is telling you something unfortunately.

It might be worth considering hanging up your riding gear until after your happy event. Lots of people don't even consider riding whilst pregnant, so at least you've had a while. I rode into my eighth month with my first child, but that was ages ago and I was probably very foolish. My doctor didn't know :o. Everyone's different, but listen to your body, enjoy your horse from the ground and look forward to your new baby, and being able to ride again in a few months.

As said above it's pretty normal, as everything is loosening off ready for the baby arriving. I'm 30 weeks, and haven't ridden since I found out at 8 weeks. My choice totally, but after a miscarriage I kind of woke up to the risks and stopped. It feels dreadful when everyone mounts up, but i can still lunge and train and it's not forever. It would be far worse if my very safe ride fell as they can do even at walk, and I had to go through all that heartache again. It seems endless, but keep crossing the days off and know you are doing the right thing by your baby and your body.
Best of luck with baby!

I am 24 weeks and rode until recently (22 weeks), for what it's worth I was not in any pain when riding, so I would really listen to your body and stop at least until you can discuss it with your midwife/doctor. Unfortunately since stopping the riding my back has started hurting a bit but I was finding the riding more and more scary as the bump was becoming more 'real' if that makes any sense. I have come across a Pilates for pregnant women DVD (I used to do a lot of Pilates before the pregnancy but I am not sure all exercises are OK when you are pregnant), so I might try that to keep myself supple and sane!!

i would consider not riding until bump has arrived, i have 3 georgous children that i wouldnt change for the world but suffered SPD/PGP (same thing different names) & now have been grounded indefinetly, i struggle to carry the kids, walk unaided & rolling over in bed without pain is a dream now (one day!!!)

i have physio fortnightly with very little improvement, my eldest is 4 & youngest is a year old. had i known then what i know now i may well have done things differently, but my little section A is now learning to drive so i can at least still be active with horses although the urge to throw a leg over & gallop off still lingers (i cant even manage sidesaddle :( so have had to put that up foro sale too :( )
