I managed to drop a breeze block on my big toe last night and braved to A and E to confirm it is broken, (above the main joint fortunately), but have also lost the nail and damaged the nail bed, so was a bit bloody at the time!!

However it is not that painful and can walk, so am thinking a bit of gentle riding in a few days should be fine?

Any other toe experiences and how did it affect you?

I've currently got a strained tendon & am still riding - I just take my stirrups away or go bareback so there is no pressure on my foot. Be warned, getting off is slightly painful!

As long as it doesn't hurt and it doesn't compromise your safety while you are riding then I don't see why not.

I'd probably be the sort of person that would still attempt riding with a broken arm/leg though!

I don't know how it would effect you being as it is your big toe but I suppose the only way to be sure is to try :)
I had both my little toes broken at one point and still rode, it didn't bother me as much as when I was walking tbh :)

Just make sure your horse doesn't tread on your foot when you get on!

I'd be more worried about getting off than the actual riding :p

Have a mounting block, so will just have to make it a 'dismounting' block too!

Thanks for your support and and will have a go tomorrow.

You have my sympathy; people seem to think it is funny (I know I got very little sympathy with a broken big toe) but it is very painful. To be honest, if it's hurting too much, don't do it - however, when I broke mine I continued to ride, but bareback - stirrups seemed to make the pain worse.

B**ger my clumsiness!!!!

Good friend has just phoned to say she has 2 free tickets/car pass for xc day at Badminton...and would I like to go?

She offered to hire me a mobility scooter, but just couldn't take the humiliation!!!!!!!

That'll learn me.

I broke mine when out on a hack - horse was being a bit unco-operative at gate opening so I dismounted to do it, cue her leaping about and landing on my toe :(

I went to a local show the 2 days later and did a few rounds of showjumping however I did borrow a pair of boots two sizes bigger! I still have problems now with that toe as it doesn't bend as much as the other so am limited to height of heels I can wear and am also susceptible to cramp or tingling in it when riding (although bendy stirrups alleviate this a lot)

If it doesn't hurt then by all means ride but just be careful

I some how managed to fall off the sofa (I wasn't even drunk ;)) and landed funnily on the edge of my foot. I managed to break a bone in my foot and 2 toes. I had the saddle fitter booked the following day so had to ride. To be honest for me walking was AGONY but was more the bending of the foot that hurt, it was a little incomfortable if I put pressure in the stirrup but for a gentle wander you should be ok. I had to go for thin socks though as my foot swelled rather large!!

LadyK..If you have broken your toe and now have very limited movement, to the point where you cant wear heels, then you need to go to your doctor!! Honestly!
I think you may have Hallux limitus/rigidus. Google it to get the best explanation of what it is. I have it, and I left it so long it is now bi lateral.
Here is the worst part..In a few weeks I have to go and get my toe pinned to stop any movement as the slightest twitch is agony. I will be completely off my feet for a week, no riding for about eight, as long as all goes well, but will be months before I am back to normal. Then once that is all done I have to go back and get the toe on the other foot fixed, that one is a joint replacement, not sure how long that knocks me off my feet!! Not easy when you have two horses, two dogs and a husband who works away from home for a month at a time!!

My son broke his toe two days into the summer holidays last year. He rode again a week later but couldnt get his boots on for over a month so he rode without stirrups and just extra sock on that foot.
He even went to a show and rode all day with no boots or stirrups. He managed a 4 foot puissance wall on his 13hh pony which did cause a bit of a stir !!
The consultant told him he should still not ride 8 weeks after but we didnt confess. There was a distinct gap in the bones at the first x ray and they thought that it would go back together when the swelling went down but it didnt so the new bone had to harden in the gap.
He is only just 16 so we hope that he wont have trouble later on. He didnt walk on it and just rode with no pressure on it.
I hope that you heal well and are back riding soon

I broke my big toe running up the stairs :o don't really ride anyway so that wasn't an issue, but was back up the yard working weekends within a week .. Not a clever idea! Still crunches now occasionally and I've broken it twice since, it's probably best for you in the long term to give it a while to heal properly :)

I have ridden and it was ok!!

The only moment I felt a twinge was when wally cob spooked sideways at a pheasant, but no pain other than that. I only walked and did a few short trots but was enough to keep us both sane on such a beautiful day.

Had to go hosp after to have toe re-dressed, so popped into my local feed store and bought a pair of steel toe cap jod boots........after my lab leapt onto my poorly toe this morning, thought they may be a sound investment!

As long as it's not too painful maybe just bite the bullet and give it a go?

(I have ridden with a hairline fracture of my shin bone.....Mind you I was a lot younger and dafter back then, but I wanted to keep my horse fit for hunting and there was no-one else to exercise him!)

My horse broke my 2nd toe , 3 days later while trying to get on at a XC and she was wound up she stood on it again but also breaking my little toe

Went round the XC holding tears in felt like a hot poker had been rammed through my foot.
