Riding with a lost shoe

I wouldn't ride with a lost shoe either, their balance would be off and depending on what surface you could bruise the sole of the hoof.

Some horses have stronge feet whilst others dont. It depends on you the person what you do. :)

For me it depends on the individual horse and whether there's damage to the foot as a result of the shoe coming off. Have done some light work in the sand school with a missing shoe for a few days before farrier arrives but personally I wouldn't hack in this situation.

Personally I wouldn't. As a last resort I'd possibly ride in the school, and more likely would do it if it was a lost hind shoe, not a front. There's no way I'd hack out. My horse has huge feet and I wouldn't want to risk bruised soles.

My friend has a welshie which only has shoes on his fronts, he once lost a shoe and she still rode him in the paddock. It was only for a week or so while they tried to get a hold of the farrier but he wasn't affected and she didn't do any roadwork or jumping on him, just schooled him out in their field :)
If I had a horse, I wouldn't like the idea. But her welshie was a tough little thing and didn't have an issue xx

depends totally on the horse. with my wimpy TB i wouldn't but my 5 year old i would. and would only do so in the arena- not on a hack or anything

My dear horse has managed to pull his front shoe off overnight, so annoying as was planning lovely weekend of long hacks as both my children are away! I personally don't think it is worth riding without a shoe on, even in the school. Hopefully my farrier will stick it back on on Monday and I'd prefer him not to be any more footsore than he already is. Sometimes you can get away with a back shoe off depending on the horse but mine is full TB so no chance!

I think much as this except that my one doesn't have huge feet. He does however carry on like he is crippled when he has lost a shoe. I think he might lie down and refuse to move if I tried to ride him with a shoe missing!

Ive rode in a school with a lost shoe, but polished up things like halting and moving from the leg, didnt canter nor trot to much and only did around 20mins to tie himover
