Hi i have just had to have a pacemaker fitted, its only been a week and already frustrated with not being able do things for myself. I have to be careful for the next 6-8 weeks but as i don't know anybody who has a pacemaker there are still lots of questions.

Does anybody else have a pacemaker, and do you still ride?

Hi, sorry I don't have any experience of pacemakers your consultant should be able to help you. I hope all goes well and you're back in the saddle soon!

I'm not experienced in pacemakers but surely you are safer to ride now than before when you presumably had an arythmia? I would probably wear a body protector to protect your chest from falls. Can't you ask your consultant directly?

No personal experience but a previous instructor of mine has a pacemaker fitted. She had a heart valve operation after a rotational fall - not absolutely sure of the history. Then she suffered from a from a rare cancer and during the chemo the heart valve became infected and had to be replaced. She events up to intermediate level and doesn't appear to let it stop her doing anything.

Hope you are back in the saddle soon :)

Thanks,
Thats great to know your instructor still rides with one. I will be seeing my cardiologist this week, so i will ask him but i think i was just worried he would say no!

Well i have 6-8 weeks of doing nothing so that should bring us into spring! That's something to look forward to, im only a happy hacker so not likely to want to start eventing now lol.

Hello, I am 34 and have had a pacemaker for 5 years due to sinus node disease. I got back into riding 18 months ago and have my own horse and regularly hack, school and jump.
It's just about common sense and be careful, but a pacemaker won't stop you riding :)

My YO is 93 years young. He had a pacemaker fitted recently and was riding again in no time (despite doctor's orders) and taking his lovely old gelding for a very energetic canter and general jolly round the indoor once a week. Sadly a dodgy knee has put a stop to his riding for the time being. He tells me once his knee is right he'll be back in the saddle again.
There's hope for us all.
