Hi All. Been away for the past fortnight - its great to be back, sadly havent been doing much with the horses as a result and the one horse I had my eye on, on Horsequest, has been sold

Was wondering with the summer knocking on the door, how many HHO's ride with sunglasses, the pro's and con's and for those who do ride with them, what recommendations for brands do you have. I see some big name show jumpers ride with them. I have light sensitive eyes after my laser treatment and I find it differcult not to seriously squint on the really bright days, so looking for suggestions.

I just wear cheap run of the mill ones, always leave them at yard so gets expensive once they get nicked

i feel its safer to ride in them especially hacking. If your squinting you could miss a potential hazzard if your eyesight is compromised.

I have Oakley's - they are sunglasses designed with sports in mind so they fit well and don't move around - I wear lenses and find my eyes are sensitive to the sun.

I would find a pair that fit well and don't move - its only when you wear them you realise how much they can move when jiggling around on horse back!!

I wear a cheap pair, just in case I break them and only on the quiet horses. I wouldn't risk it on young horses (I'm good at landing on my face

Lots of people ride in glasses so I don't see how sunglasses are any different.

i sometimes ride with sunnies on. the only ones i trust are Oakleys. a friend of mine had a bad skiing crash alongside me a few years back and the doctor said that her Oakleys had saved her eyes, anything else would have shattered, apparently. (she hit the slope face-first and got ice crystals in her eyes.) i would never wear glass ones for riding in, put it that way!

I ride in glasses, anyway, so in the summer i have no worries about riding in them, but i will only use them in the school at home because i find when you go into shade with sunnies on i take longer to adjust.

I would ride in sunglasses and probably will this summer, however I wear normal glasses when I ride anyway and am used to riding in them; can't see a thing without them!!

I wear Oakley M-frames. They stick to the side of your head, are designed to be worn with helmets (cycling, etc. so don't get pulled forward by the helmet straps) and are strong (seen a pair in a shop that withstood a shotgun blast and 15m).

I always rode in the summer with cheapo sunglasses on. My eyes are sensitive to the light, and wearing contact lenses makes it worse, so I really didn't have a choice. Never had any problems, but then, I never fell off.

Another vote for oakleys - used to love my eyejackets before they finally died. As above these glasses are designed for sport and more likely to protect your eyes than cause any problems.

I would love to put a vote in for oakleys - but so can't afford them!

I have some cheapish ones - as long as they are snug fitting I think you should be fine.

If I am under a shady patch while out hacking I will usually whip them off - as although I squint a lot when out in the sunshine, I find it really hard to concentrate with sunnies on if it is anything less than sunshine - so I probably do spend quite a bit of time taking them off and ptting them on!!!

I have tons of pairs all over the place from cheap and nasty to Ray bann.
I always ride in them because
a) I am v light sensitive (I have advanced KC)
b) I get hay fever and its the best way to control pollen
c) I have to wear Contact lenses and it helps stop getting grit under them.

Another Oakleys fan. I wouldn't wear cheap ones riding as if you did fall off and land on them they'd shatter. Oakleys are designed to withstand the impact of a bullet so that they will not shatter during sports. I Have two pairs now - one old pair for riding and a newer pair for looking smart in! My old pair are 17 years old btw. They may cost a bit but by God they last. And the arm broke on them years ago and I sent them back and Oakleys replaced the arm free of charge. They have the most amazing guarantee. The only thing that isn't guaranteed is the coating on the lens, so my old pair do look pretty scratched now, but otherwise are perfect
