I don't understand any of the arguments for not wearing a hat.
You dont have to. People make choices every single day, some of these choices may be considered good choices by others, some might be thought of as bad choices. Those who wear hats dont need to make arguments for why they wear them just as those who dont wear them need not make excuses for why they dont.

I'm all for personal choice, although also consider the impact injuries have on friends and families so personally do all I can to minimise risk in a high risk sport. I'm certainly not demanding any explanations from non hat wearers, just can't understand why anyone would make the sort of choices that needlessly increase risk.

Dont lose sleep over it. We could all wonder why people do the things they do. Why do people ride motorbikes, why do people go mountaineering, why do people go sailing around the world, why do people smoke, why do people eat so much that they get fat, why do people not drink enough water? None of these things necessarily will kill them but they could, just like riding without a hat does not mean they will die or even have a head injury. Its just another choice out of the many everyone makes daily.

But it's a choice that could kill them, why take that risk? Surely common sense should kick in! People who ride motorbikes wear helmets, people who mountaineer have safety equipment, people who smoke are addicted and so on, there is no excuse for stupidity IMO.

ETA you could die by falling off a horse, so why not protect yourself as much as possible to lessen the risk? Is that not sensible, especially if you have children and family.

I can only presume that the people who ride without hats, do so because their heads are so solid that, if they landed on them, they would do no harm! :D

What a fantastic quote!
No matter how 'brilliant', 'talented' and 'experienced' any of us are, accidents still happen and is it really such a hardship to put a hat on. To say that you get idiot drivers - what about about idiot riders who would choose to hack out without using the most basic safety precautions?
Every horse can trip, stumble or spook - it doesn't matter how well schooled they are or how beautiful your surface is. Don't be a prat - wear a hat!!

Sarah's mum - I agree, although had lost the will to argue with that poster. Its a poor argument, mountaineering etc is fun. Riding without a hat is no more fun than with in my opinion. Just my thoughts. Ho hum.

I'll let you off for calling me 'sarah's mum ' :p

And yes, people that do high risk sports, protect themselves as best they can, helmets, safety harness, ball bag gaurds :D etc etc, so while yes i agree they are taking risks, they are also using the correct and available protection, to avoid injury and possible death. That is why riding hats were invented.

OK J, stay calm, its just a forum. No offence meant, nothing personal . Its all about healthy debate.
Stay calm? Where was I not calm? I thought people were interested in healthy debate otherwise I wouldnt have pointed out that every single day, every single person makes some decisions which other people may agree or disagree with. The riding with a hat on is just another decision a person makes as is riding a motorcycle or sailing around the world or being a glutton and becoming fat. Many things are deemed bad for us, or could kill us, but often these things dont regardless of the risk perceived by others.

I see my comments were lost on you as all you picked up on was the high risk sports and missed out other day to day things. My point was not high risk sports and the protection offered these days for them. My point was we all make decisions every day based on a number of factors and that it is not yours nor my place to say what decision is right for other adults to make about their own person.

No not lost! Just wasn't going to list everything! My point was, you have a choice what decisions you make and a foolish decision makes you a fool. There is no other way of putting it, but seen as you clearly see no wrong in riding without a hat, i'm not going to try and reason with that kind of logic!!

It is also not a choice of what is the right decision!!!! It's safety or not!!! how can you not grasp that. My gosh

ALso since when was smoking a high risk sport!!! I listed that. As i said, logic!

never have ridden without one, never will for the same reason I wear a seatbelt - accidents happen. I work for the ambulance service and I don't want one of my colleagues scraping me off the floor. Riding is a dangerous enough sport without me making it even more risky. Even if I went to the field and rode in bareback, I would take my hat. It takes 2 seconds to put on, I don't have it on for hours and hours so the heat doesn't bother me, and it gives me more confidence. I also wear a hat and gloves if leading a horse that I know will be daft

With the accidents I've heard about I just wouldn't risk it, plus I already had a head injury aged 5 which led to me having fits. If that happened again and I had another fit, I wouldn't be able to drive. Plus I quite like having all my faculties about me, and I have signed a living will that if I am for any reason left a "vegetable" or on life support, that my parents can withdraw care or refuse treatment

Please do not put words in my mouth and do me the courtesy of reading what I have written. Not at any point have I said I agree or disagree with anyone riding without a hat on. It is not your place to be judgemental and nasty and rude about people who make different decisions to you. Yes I did read over your earlier smoking excuse and decided not to comment on it.
