My mare is being constantly covered by anothers livery gelding. He'll jump her at least once an hour when she's in season, usually more. I saw him mounting her 8 times in the space of an hour last season, whilst i poo-picked

It's the full shebang too - stallion dance, mounting, penetration etc.

He's FAR too big to be doing (all 17.3hh of heavy weight hunter

) and is damaging her (yest she came in with a huge gash down her hips from his shoes, never mind 800kg of horse crushing her quarters).

Yest afternoon I penned her off in her own little paddock (much to my disgust - I HATE seeing horses on their own). She's lonely and a bit depressed but not too upset.

The gelding on the otherhand is stressing himself out big time! He has totally trashed the other side of the fence and the ground says he's spent hours rearing and spinning and sliding up and down.

Last straw was this afternoons, when he tried to mount her as I lead her through the field. He's easy to chase off (worlds biggest pansy) but that's not the point!

Owner is going to call the vet first thing on monday to have him tested, but it's unlikely he is a rig (true rigs are rare).

Is there anything else that can be done? She can't be seperated from the others more than she already is, nor he from them.

We're going to try RigCalm from global herbs. Does it work? How often does it need feed? Will he need to be on it all summer, or just as she comes into season? He's interested in the other mares, and mounts them too, but not as obsessed as he is with my mare.

Try contacting Global herbs, I think it needs fed every day.

The site should give a bit more information, I believe it has been successful.

I know it is natural behaviour and maybe when your mare's season finishes he will stop being so randy, but it must be frustrating for you not to mention worrying for her health.

I hope everything works out ok for you.

Wehad a gelding, had been gelded late and not a proper rig but acted colty around the mares and in the stable. Rigcalm was great, instructions on the tub, we found recommended dose worked and we were able to cut back after loading period

Thanks

He's now one RigCalm and, as suggested by the feed merchant, a couple of days worth of SuperCalm (an extra strong 'instant' calmer) whilst the RigCalm kicks in.

He wouldn't eat all of it but when his owner checked an hour later he was no longer gaurding her paddock and hasn't been seen near her since.

She however is no longer in season so he's going to stay on it for the next three weeks. If it works, great. If not, well, it's used up the rest of the tub. And I'll have to think of something else to do with her for four days.
