hi - first post in here so please be gentle with me - due to circumstances that can't be helped I have a bit of a situation on my hands. My parents dog - a flat coated retriever is due to have her puppies this weekend - unfortunately its so happens that my grnadparents are in need of my parents going to stay with them for the next week (another story all altogether ) so I have been left with the dog. Working on worse case scenario in that she will probably have them when it is just me there - help ! Its her first litter but has had no problems at all in her pregnancy - very chilled out and calm but already having a little milk leakage. The room for her and her puppies is all set up and she is happy sleeping in there overnight. From what I have read , im best to leave alone as much as possible but is there anything else i need to know just in case. She has some liver chestnut in her breeding line and have read they are likely to be weaker ? Any help would be much appreciated
 
It's OK, we don't bite (hard :p)

I'd see if you can get an experienced breeder/someone who has reared puppies to visit/sit with you.

I'm assuming you have a vet's number in case of emergencies (as a maiden it may not be an easy whelp)

Have you got all bits and bobs, whelping box etc?

Order a copy of The Book of the Bitch off Amazon or get one from the library.

Thanks :) Tbh my mum seems pretty well prepared - whelping box prepared etc. Vets number is tattooed on my brain and they have been really good - they have been pre warned that this maybe a not ideal situation. The dog is used to me and im not a stranger as such. There will be loads of photoes :) Thanks for your advice :)
 
I have flatcoats and they are generally easy whelpers. I have never heard of livers being weaker than blacks (please note they are called liver not chestnut or chocolate) the average litter is 6-8 puppies. My bitch shelled a puppy every 1/2 hour which was fab as I had plenty of time to weigh each pup and make sure every thing was ok. The book of the bitch is an essential. Good luck I am sure you will b fine. Please post pictures when pips are born
