I'm gutted, my normally lovely gelding, lived with our mare for two years, with no problems, has suddenly turned rapist and has cut a mare to ribbons mounting her and has tried to mount another mare in his field.
We have had the vet out today to test him for being a rig, although at 8 yrs old, with no previous problems I can't see it.
Mares and geldings have grazed together happily for months, but this last few days my boy has turned into a stallion around mares, it's not as though he hasn't had a mare in season around him, he has always been the top dog in the field but has never been nasty, the poor mare is cut and bruised and is in shock (I know the feeling) and I have offered to pay her vet bills'
Our YM dictates who goes where and we do have limited grazing but again we have had no problems with a mixed herd.
Has anyone had any similar experiences as I am at a loss to explain it, I have my 2 boys in through the day and out at night when the mares are in till we can figure out where to go from here
Any advice appreciated as I really feel like giving up on horses
