riggish behaviour

My mare was harassed by a riggy gelding. He was 'filling his boots' as you termed it, but my mare was being bitten, kicked, ran along the fence line and generally bullied because she is blind on the left, and he took advantage of this.
He would mount her as I was taking her out of the field, this was extremely dangerous!

The owners put him on RigCalm, but I refused to put my girl back in with him. The other mare in the field was 17.2 and he was 13.2. She had marks around her hocks but he had Little Man Syndrome where this mare was concerned.

Not quite the same as my situation because as i have stated the herd is happy and clam.

My horse was a stallion till 5 and was at stud, then gelded. He went crazy when I first got him to the yard (aged 6) when he sniffed a mare in season - it was like instant viagra and actually quite frightening. He does mount mares now, but he's not shod, and I hope he doesn't get a nasty kick in the sheath from some mare who changes her mind at the last minute. He's fine out riding with mares, and doesn't try to jump out of his stable or field or anything like that. He's very protective of me and very brave out riding. He can be quite sort of bolshy, but with gentle handling, he doesn't boss me about - if I fight with him, he will fight back. We have worked out a good relationship now after just over a year.

oh, and my horse isn't a rig, he just fancies mares. All the geldings I have had have been the same. Unless a mare is in season and asking for it, I don't think it's very likely that a gelding would try to mount a mare. There are other geldings in our herd which mount mares too.
