I kinda posted about this last week but now the decision has been made.

I bought my three year old unbroken - as he has a fantastic temperment and I bought him with a view to getting back into riding after a long time off. He was in a great yard being broken and the YO is a BHSI so was going to give me lessons on him. He is broken now but as although there is no badness in him, he is really cheeky and needs a strong rider to make him do his work. As i haven't been riding regularly in year, i am very rusty and when I rode him for the first time at the weekend, he just totally took the mick out of me.

I spoke to the ayrd owner, and as I am moving house and wont be able to keep him in the yard anymore, we both agreed that he is too much for me. Turns out that he has a fantastic jump and the yard owner said that he will bring him on and bring him to shows for me.

What do you think he is worth? I asked last week but I was shot down cos I don't know what he is like to box and in traffic! He is only three and just broken so he hasn't been out in traffic and he hasn't left the yard yet.. All I can say is knowing his temp. I don't think it will be a problem. He is three, huge jump, loose lunging over 135cm and loves it! leave him loose in a school and he will spend the time jumping himself! he is 16.0hh but will probably make 16.1+ as he has to even up. Grandsire was cavalier royale, sire royal touch. dam unregistered. good to do, good to clip and shoe.

He might be the perfect horse for me in a couple of years time when I have gotten back into the swing of things but not now. I just think either he will throw me off, get totally ruined and pick up bad habits or more than likely both and then he wont have the future he could have. and I probably will never ride again!

I am making the right decision or am I?????

Think you are absolutely right to sell this horse.

As for price - well what did you pay for him and how much has it cost you to have him broken in.

Thanks Amymay. Just needed a little confirmation!

He has cost me about 6000 so far but wont be ready for shows for another 8 weeks. all in all I will have spnt about 8000 on him when he is fully broken and has a good few shows behind him.

I think you are so right to sell. I've seen many good horses ruined like this and many riders loose their confidence. I'd say you be looking at 6-7K with a few shows under his bely, but hard to say without seeing photos/video.

My lads by Cavalier Royale by the way. He was bred to jump but I mainly do dressage with a bit of SJ and Xc

Then i would say if he really has good potential then you should sell him in the price range of 7-9K and if he has good bloodlines that will impress people too!

Thanks for all the replies. I should have said, that was euros i was talking not pounds! Just spoke to the yard owner - he really is great! He says that he is jumping very well at home so it depends on what performance he puts in at the shows. Agreed to have him more than ready as if he decides to be cheeky at a show if he is not ready, it will do a lot of damage to the price. Thinking 2 months more work then 2 months of shows.

Such a relief. I knew for the passed few months that he was developing into too much horse for what I wanted. So glad that I have made decision and delighted to see that in all your oppinions, its the right one.

I definitely think you have made the right decision to sell him - he needs someone who is experienced and confident and can take him out and about and bring out the best in him, you sound as if you need something to get you back into riding and give you lots of confidence. He sounds like a lovely talented youngster, probably worth £4.5 - £5.5k, maybe a bit more if he is a stunner. Probably best for you to cut your losses and let him go to the right person. A hard, but brave decision - good luck.

Was based in Meath but now moved to wicklow. He is lovely! Such a cheeky sod but has a heart of gold. there is no badness in him he is just not the horse I need right now. Will probably cringe in a few years time when i see him at the RDS or something!

I don't have pics of him but he is very dark bay with the typical cavalier very developed neck and shoulders. the musle definition on him is amazing (unfortunatly it is hidden under a very thick winter coat at the mo!). When he arrived at the yard, loads of people commented on what a looker he is. He is a bit scruffier now but if he was spruced up he can turn heads!

He is a good boy in the stable - sleeps flat out - he is really calm and quiet - been known to scratch ears with hind legs when you are trying to groom him. Easy to tack up, groom etc. he has been very well broken - the yard really know what they are doing (unlike me!)

He really is lovely and will be a brilliant little horse for someone - unfortunately its not me! I am not capable of handling nor do I have the facilities to bring him on - or the time. He was supposed to be a happy hacker with a bit of ability to do the odd competion. He is a clever talented horse and neededs to be be solid work with a good confident competion rider.

I am not a strong rider, need confidence built, don't want to compete that much, don't have decent schooling facilities, am student so don't have time to ride every day. Could we be a worse match! I will destroy him and he will destroy me - he has to go!

Will miss him though!
