Right I'm knackered!

We collected our new puppy last night. (pictures to follow later tonight) he's a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever if anyone missed my last posts.

We arrived home at midnight after I had left straight from work. We let him have a good sniff round (he decided our cat was his new best buddy, cat didn't really agree) and introduce him to the crate, his bed and some lovely smelly blankets we brought with him. We tucked him up with a hot water bottle and ticking clock a bit later on.

I have never heard such a loud puppy. Every half an hour he would start up with this high pitched wail that went on for about 15 minutes. I've hardly slept so am sitting here in the office with matchsticks propping my eyes open!

I managed to get some sleep between 2am and 4:30am though! Maybe I'm spoiled, but I'm used to puppies settling after an hour or so then sleeping through and waking me up early morning.

Got to love puppy ownership!

Not had much to do with tollers then?
Lovely dogs but quite possibly one of the noisiest breeds on the entire planet! Used to dread camping near anybody who had one at agility shows, as they never seemed to actually shut up & have this incredibly loud, migraine-inducing, ringing bark!

Jaq, I've have a a toller but I rescued him as an adult. I expected noise, but every 30mins? sheesh!

I'm at work now but apparently he is curled up in his crate (door open) with his puppy kong which he adores.

widget, we still haven't decided, but it looks like he may be a Denver.

Until then I'm hoping to teach my old (6) dog new trciks and see if she'll take to agility!
 
Apart from being somewhat noisy, they are sweet & could match a collie at agility if they were a little less, erm, 'independent natured' shall we say?

They can certainly jump & are very athletic (agility courses are getting tighter & tighter these days!), though as I say, their origin & character makes them less tractable than a collie to work with in a situation where split second timing counts for everything!

A good one could be very hard to beat though & it's always great to see the less popular breeds doing well!
You would also qualify for ABC classes (Anything But a Collie) & could do really well there too!

Good luck with the older one, 6 is certainly not too old to start training. I have trained several older dogs & if they enjoy it, they can pick it up a lot quicker than a bouncy, distractable youngster! lol

agility for me will be for him to burn off some extra energy and have some good fun! I'm not planning on having any ambitions for him, just as long as he's enjoying it.

I've been looking into the KC puppy good citizen so I'll be doing his good citizen with him first until he's old enough to try agility

Yeah yeah, we'll see, they all say that to start with! lol

Then the dog turns out to be actually rather good & it's a whole different story! If you're even remotely competitive by nature & the pup turns out to be kinda handy, you just won't be able to resist!

Starts off with the odd show 'just to see': by the following year you get a tent so you can stay over at weekend shows: next year you think 's*d the tent' & get a small caravan!
A few years down the line, you have an entire team of agility dogs & a ruddy great caravan with all mod cons!

You'll see!
