......just had a quote through from NFU (who I have to say I normally use) and it is nearly £50 a month  for one horse, whose value isn't much at all.

I want to go with a reputable company who WILL pay out if there are problems, I looked at E&L and theirs was nearly £20 a month cheaper but that was for 'intermediate' cover. Anyone know what this is?

Can anyone recommend good insurance companies that don't quote ridiculous prices.

ETA: His policy with his owner runs out tomorrow so need to insure him for Friday!

We are with SEIB and have only heard good things about them. Haven't claimed ourselves yet (after moving from one company who told us it was our fault the horse trod on a nail in the field) but know others who have with no probs.

I had E and L insurance for my boy - admittedly a few years ago but wouldn't use them again. He had cancer and the cover wasn't worth the paper it was printed on. Have heard good things re KBIS and Petplan. Used petplan since the Eand L claim but never had to claim.

I've recently changed from NFU to PetPlan for the same reason. Haven't had to make any claims so far luckily but have spoken to them on the phone a couple of times and they are really pleasant and helpful.

Friends with NFU for home and farm insurance swear by them and they paid out no problem for various claims that we were amazed at! We looked into them for our house insurance but they were expensive.

I'd avoid E&L like the plague! I had a mare insured with them a few years ago who was hit by a car in her way home after decanting her rider. They turned down my claim because they said it was my own fault for letting someone hack her out alone. She was a quiet 7yr old mare, ridden by a competent adult - it was a freak accident (A duck flew out of a pond and went underneath her. She was a horse - you'd think a horse insurance co would be more reasonable.
I've heard many other stories like this about them. Not recommended.
I'm with KBIS, who seem very good.

They were pleasant to us until we tried to claim, then we got shouted at... (not exaggerating). Just my experience though.

I was warned off pet plan and went with nfu on recommendation. They were actually cheaper although it was still £50 a month.

Petplan or KBIS for me. Another avoid for A&L unless you want to have to fight for every claim!!!...not worth the hassle in my opinion!.x

I use SEIB - I have heard some vets won't accept claims from E&L unless you pay the bill up front first as they can't get the money out of the insurance company.

Scottish Equestrian....E and L are cheap but hopeless and didnt pay out a penny when I had a horse PTS under the vets recommendations. I wouldnt say £50 a month was particularly expensive.

I think any of the companies apart from E&L are ok. Just look at what the vets fees etc cover you for.

I've just put my first claim in to NFU - for splint fracture surgery.

Rang up to tell them what was happening before the op, they sent claim form direct to vets and after roughly 2 weeks sent an email to confirm they are paying out and are sending cheque directly to vet. I've not had to do a thing apart from pay the excess (and a small amount for the stabling as they pay 50%)

Very impressed so far, the first part of the claim is 3k, total likely to be close to the £5k limit.

I'll have paid out approx £2k in premiums and had £5k paid out in one claim so I think that is good value.

KBIS have been brilliant. Paid £3200 fo far, just claimed on same claim and my policy runs out next week. My monthly payment has gone up £5 on renewal which isnt bad for how much they've paid out. Get the platinum cover, £350 excess but 15months cover for each claim so worth it! I pay £35 for one horse and £37 for the other one.

Another vote for Petplan. Came highly recommended from a friend who has claimed 18k in the past 3 years and they have paid out. My policy worked out about 50 pounds a month though and thats with cover for a nominal value- we initally requested a quote for his true value and were a bit taken back by how much it was! We have cover for LOU though- i do think that adds to the premium.

I've just insured mine with Petplan as it's who most people recommended to me / had good experiences with - fingers crossed I never have to use it! Have been warned to avoid E&L at all costs.

I have always been an NFU customer and claimed a few times over the years, I very nearly switched to Petplan this year though as their quote was cheaper (only slightly mind you) Whatever you choose, make sure you read all the small print not all cover is the same! So if just looking at price, you might not actually be comparing like with like. It was only when I went to take out the Petplan policy that I realised this and stopped the process halfway through, I also heard some stories of PetPlan being less than helpful on other forums so I stuck with NFU and I am so glad I did.

I currently have two claims ongoing with them (I really hope things don't come in 3's) and they have been absolutely fantastic, really helpful, professional and quick to respond. Even though they initially quibbled one of the claims, after a couple of letters from me and my vet they accepted the claim and even during that process everyone I dealt with was superb and I really felt as though they wanted to help me get the claim accepted. This reminds me I must write to NFU to congratulate them, everyone is always quick to complain but less so when things have gone well and I really have been so impressed with them. I guess what I'm saying is you get what you pay for and though they might be a bit more expensive what counts is when it comes to the crunch and how they treat you when you need to make a claim.

I have heard a lot of bad press about EandL.

We have just had to make a claim re autumns bruised tendon sheath through NFU and they have been fantastic even paying our diesel costs to the vets and back and no exclusions placed on her for in the future.

I have always used Scottish equestrian. Always paid out for my claims in under a week. Currently paying £22 a month for their full vets fee cover inc transport, hospitalisation and alternative. Not including third party as I have BHS gold so not needed.

Carriage House- I pay 50 per month which includes two horses, my trailer and £1500 worth of tack. I have claimed too and they were fantastic. Really friendly and helpful- can't recommend them highly enough!

pet plan!

have both of mine with them.... they were slow paying a claim but that was down to my vets messing about.....!! (yet i got th eblame lol!)

they insure my colic prone one for £33 a month (including tack) and my youngster for £14 a month - value at £1000 each :)
