I need soke advice getting right rein canter.
I have a chunky traditional cob and we are doing reasonably well at dressage intros. Wanting to start prelims but right rein canter is holding us back
Some days he gets it every time and other days not at all.
Ive tried coming off a circle, leaning in. Looking out etc. Any other ideas.
Its mostly fustrating because some days its fab! On thurs last week he got it every time and then had weekend off and then allthis week not at all except once today.

Help! Im wanting to do p7 because canter is coming off a circle!
Thanks :)

Be really clear with the leg aids - use just the outside leg and back behind the girth as this sets the legs into the correct sequence.

On the days he's not so good put your schooling whip in the outside hand and flick him with it as you ask.

Other tips that sometimes work
Ask for canter over a pole placed in the corner, have the outer end raised

Look really determinedly over your OUTSIDE shoulder, it brings your inside hip forward.

Approaching the corner make it tighter by looking out through the end until you ask for the canter

Do you mean he's not getting the correct strike off? How old is he?

Another good thing to think is as well as outside leg back, think of inside leg forward. A lot of people concentrate on getting that outside leg back and the inside leg swings back too so negates the purpose of the outside leg.

I was wondering that. Agree with Tnavas about only asking with OS leg as it helps them strike off on the correct leg.

I did dressage with my old heavyweight and he was the same some days we made it and some days our comments were "well tried but he didn't really help you did he?":D

Try asking whilst changing the rein across your diagonal, just before you hit the track again. Worked for me. Is he consistent in the lunge too?

I find that a great exercise - had an ex TB racer that found right canter lead very difficult - he was 19 years old at the time - this exercise finally taught him to canter on the correct lead.

I cantered across the arena and just as we arrived at the track, came back to trot and then into the new lead - worked every time.

Same exercise though has not worked for one of my young pupils - her pony though has a slight pelvic problem which is currently being treated and he is spelling at the moment. Will be interesting to see how he does when he comes back into work

Trot round on the left rein, at the short end of the school start to leg yield from the track towards the middle, aim to hit the track somewhere before the centre line when you get to the track, ask for right canter, dont just swing the bottom half of your leg back, move your rt leg back and slightly lift your inside rein, dont drop your head to look, just look up and along the track.

Am being thick! Can't follow your directions - are you able to draw them please :)

Basically at the bottom of the school, legyieldup the school from the track towards the centre line, when you get to the top track ask for canter on the rt rein, or can aso be done from half pass
