I have never paid more than £1000 for a horse and have had some cracking ones in my time.

Im trying to find one for my mum at no more than £500 but a few people have said its unlikely i'll find one for my budget...

Sooooo.... How much was your horse/pony bargain?

Mine was £700 for a 6yo Sec D (with nebo/Derwen bloodlines) shes no grade A superstar but shes bloody fantastic for me!

Mine was £700 for an ex champion trotter - cracking wee horse who I adored, sold him to my friend who now rides him as a successful wee unaffiliated dressage star.

(Will see if I can find a piccie on this laptop)

Here is a piccie of us in the early days - bit wintery!!!

sorry.

We bought a Cobby leggy youngster from the sales for £99.99p(90 guineas), my well bred shettie was £250, well bred and best fell pony ever was £250 as an 18 month old.

The haffy we bought in Feb was £1300 but after looking at her papers we found out that her sire was a national champ on more than one occasion but had to be put down last year so I think she is actually worth more....good job the prev. owners didn't look into her breeding!

We bought a 16.1hh 4 yo andalusian x tb for just over £2500 (Although they - the sellers - wanted rather much more!). Considering how fab he's turned out though he was most definitely a bargain!

Well, as you might now..our proffesion is buying bargains(younsgters) to school and bring on ands then make big bucks....so we bought this horses off a very big racing yard as she had no interest in racing for £900 as a 3yo!!!
and these are the pics after i had ridden her for about a month..baring in mind when we got her dshe was just mouthed and backed to gallop in a straight line.....and this is only after a month.....

9 year old ex racer irish TB, cost £1k taught me pretty much everything I know, even though he didnt know anything himself...... went all through PC, evented a bit, did a year as a dressage pony at Stephen Clarks........ will always be missed, he was my best friend for over half my life!!

mine was buzz (bay in my siggy) was given to us as ex race horse that kept coming second last he has done pony club novice but have had to trun him away to concentrate on futer super star and rebel

Ours was £100 for a light hack/companion mare. She'd been retired at 13 as her owner had died, we got her at 17. I traced her breeding, and discovered her sire Section D lines were pretty hot! We bred her to a Section D stallion, and she gave us a cracking spotted filly. I guess the filly was a bargain too, as the stud fee was £150!

nobody is saying it cant be done it can my friend buys and sells horses she got a fjord for £600 and got nealry 4 grand for it when she sold it on a girl who had it on loan got it jumping 3,6ft and she got another pony the other day for £500 but its skinny and a wind sucker [was a pity buy] people are saying you want a basically perfect horse for your mum nice temperment ''bombproof'' and nobody said you WONT get one just said you would be very lucky to fibd one.

I would personally if you find one get it 5* vetted at that price to make sure there is nothing wrong with it im always very suspicious of anything going that cheap.

Both my horses (ex racers) cost me £900 and Norman £1000, and for their temperament,. ability etc, and age (both were 9 at purhcase) I think they were a blimmin' good buy!

[/ QUOTE ]There are millions of horses in the world and tens or even hundreds of thousands in England, along with a good handful of disenchanted owners (or, more to the point, parents of owners) who will readily hand over a pony for a pittance if it will get the expense of keeping it off their hands. I don't think the search is at all futile, but I do think it'll take patience and persistence.

£650 for Hemir (over here in France!) : 15.3hh trotter x arab (trotter lines are pretty good i think and was told his sire was a sort after arab stallion?? not sure though!!), he's jumping 1m10 at home...and 13 this year, I honestly don't think i'll find another bargain like him!!!

not the most stylish, but back bar was 1m ish! not bad for £650

Sorry james, i wasnt having a dig at you- i just wanted to see what others got for there money.
Im my eyes, im looking for a rather old horse so to me its easily done but obv i am fully aware of the time its going to take. (Its been taking 5 months already and it took me a year to find my girl) It doesnt have to be 'perfect' just safe.

Mine was a bargain. He was bought from Doncaster bloodstock sales in Oct for £900, I then bought him 3 months later from the people that got the bargain for £6250 - I should feel fleeced because they made so much money but, to be honest, they just spotted a good deal, I have no doubt that he was worth what I paid. He is now doing his 1st season at novice and has been placed 2 out of 4 times and has points.

My friend did well. She bought her horse for £100, he went to the final of the BYEH as a 4 and 5 yr old and was novicing by the time he was 6. He is extremely talented but also very tricky!

my pony was 12/13 when i got her for £500 (2/3 years ago) - with all her tack and 4 rugs - and also a sack of feed & bale of hay!! We have done EVERYTHING together she is definately a bargain bucket pony who turned out to be a best buy!

I think the problem with trying to find a cheap boomproof horse is that you can't because the boomproof ones are fetching the most money i have one now he is 5 broken last year 14.2 and i would be asking more for him than my eventing mare as i know he is 100% safe as i put next doors 3 yo on him and know she is safe if you just wanted a cheap horse but didn't mind the odd problem you would be fine but trying to find a cheap horse that is safe for a novice is hard
