Dear all, I may be taking a 15.2 IDxTB on loan.
She's quite overweight at the moment because she's not been doing much for a while. I weight taped her at the weekend and she was around 640 kilos (can't remember exactly).
What do you think would be a good weight for her - I know I'll be able to tell by eye when she looks fit but wondered what weight that would be?
She has an apple bottom and her neck's a bit cresty at present but she is definately more ID than TB

Weight tape readings are a rough guide that varies from horse to horse depending on conformation. If you took two 15.2 ID crosses who were both a healthy weight they could have very different weight tape measurements according to whether they were deep chested, short-legged or not.

Best way is to condition score - you want to to get her weight down to a point where you can feel her ribs easily but not see them, and get rid of the gutter on her bottom and the crest on her neck.

Weigh tapes are not crap IMO. They are very useful for gauging weighloss aswell as by eye, as long as you remember they are a guide NOT gospel.

Ideal weights are individual though and you need to find the right one for your horse. With a peachy bum and cresty neck she is obviously overweight. I have a TB x ID and he is just over 500kg oon the weightape so obviously very different to yours OP. lol
