Iv had my gelding 18 years he is now just 25yrs old and he got the onset of Ringbone a few years ago even though he never had a hard working life just a hacking horse, anyway the past 12 months its been particularly bad and painfull and the vet has said he must have bute every day to every other day on good days ,now iv had many horses in the past 20 odd years and all have gotten old and had many diff problems etc before the inevitable happens....but iv never had a horse on constant bute (prob to the end of his life) im aware it can cause liver damage but i just wanted to know in reality what your experiences are with a horse on constant bute ..meaning how long he will be able to take it before it takes its toll on his organs etc .....my own vet is a bit vague but i know there must be many on here who have had same experiences......Thanks xx

My old cob was diagnosed with ringbone at 12 years old. He was put on daily bute and I managed to keep him ticking over and competing at dressage for many years until he was 21. I did though swap him to danilon a couple of years ago which works much better and has less toxic effects on the liver than bute. He is happily retired and a field ornament on one danilon a day.

Good luck with your boy - careful management is the key.

My old cob has high articular ringbone and is on 1 sachet of Equiplazone a day to keep her gently hacking comfortably. My vet said that as she is unlikely to suffer from ulcers due to her lifestyle then there really is nothing to worry about. She is late teens and its better for her to be sound enough to keep a little bit fit and not get overweight than be overweight, plodding round the field in pain. I sometimes miss a day if I know shes not going to be ridden.

Btw you can get Equiplazone for 48p a sachet online with a prescription.......my vet was charging 98p.
