We have a bit for an outbreak of ringworm at the moment and about 5 of the horses on the yard (who share the same field and stable block) have it on their noses and faces. They only have about 3/4 circles each and the vet suggested some expensive scrub, however I've read mixed reports that it doesn't work as well as some home remedies. He then even admitted this himself.

Things that have been suggested: atheletes foot cream, mouth wash, vinegar and tea tree oil.

Anyone had any success with anything?? Thanks :)

Wash the areas with hibiscrub daily and put canisten cream on 2 times a day. Or indeed any athletes foot cream. It's the same fungi.
To be truthful the cheapest is imaverol as stated. 1 bottle will treat all the horses if it's only a few spots on heads etc.

I think it was Imaverol the vet recommended but it was £38 from them! :( Will look into on this link above as I don't want it to spread anymore, he only has a few rings on his nose area, however if they spread to his bridle or saddle area they're a b*gger to get rid of.

Thanks everyone :)

It might be worth creosoting everything wooden that they come into contact with aswell, although there might be something easier to use nowadays. Vicam perhaps? (Not for putting on horses directly you understand!).

Does anyone know if you can still get griseofulvin? Feed additive which interrupts the life cycle of the fungus, used to be widely available on prescription but no-one seems to recommend or prescribe it these days? Was very very useful if there were several patches, you didn't need to worry about missing any with topical treatments.

I have heard about this too (didn't know it's name though) No one else seems to know so I would be interested if anyone could shed any light on this?

I gave granules from the vet to both mine in their feeds, cost about £80 for both, and utter rubbish. Still had to canisten and hibiscrub.
Yard owner treated 6 other horses with 1 bottle of imaverol and killed it in its tract. She still has over half a bottle left. I'm sure she said it was about £25.

I used it years ago but had to twist the vet's arm to get it. It causes abortion in any female who comes into contact with it and, as many horse owners are women of child bearing age, vets are very reluctant to prescribe it.
