what is it? 2 horses on yard have been isolated so just wondering what it is and how it affects us and horses. (i have been petting one of them lots so also what are the signs of infection?) thanks
Ringworm is a fungle infection and is VERY contagious.
You'll usually see raised skin / fur. If you have been in contact with an infected horse, you need to clean yourself and clothes very well.
Put a bucket of diluted Jeyes fluid near the stables and everytime you touch any horse dunk your hands in the stuff, even if that horse is not infected. This helps stop it spreading. Thats what we did when we got it on our yard ages ago.
Its very contagious and everything that the horses that have come into contact with with need cleaning.
Virkon for walls, rugs, doors is good. The vet will perscribe a medicated wash for the horses.
It manifests itself in lots of ways, one of our horses showed urticaria type lumps, huge swellings, yet three days later she had ringworm and the swellings disappeared leaving bald patches.
It can start as a patch of rough looking hair and when you touch it the hair falls off leaving a circular patch bald in the middle which gets bigger every day.
I would watch your horse carefully, if any signs appear get the only stuff from the vet that works (can't remember the name it's a liquid you dilute) and wash your horse twice a week apart. Do the same to all your tack/rugs, even sharing a muck fork can spread the spores!
It CAN be passed on to humans as well. My horse had it years ago and I didn't really know what it was for the first day or 2, luckily neither me nor my other horse caught it. I seem to remember treating it successfully with tea tree oil, which is anti-fungal (ring worm being a fungal infection and not a rom at all, if I remember rightly!)
