Has anyone got any advice on signs, symptoms and treatment of ringworm. I think my Haflinger may have it - I found one round patch on his neck that the hair had fallen out of - it's not sore or itchy but it is round!

If you think it could be ringworm you should get the vet out to do a skin scraping for analysis, because it's very contagious; I don't know if your horse is kept with others but he could easily pass it on if it's ringworm.

The vet will probably give you some imaverol to use before the lab test comes back if he thinks there's half a chance of it being ringworm. It's a useful thing to have in your tack box to treat anything dodgy looking straight away. You dilute it 1:50 so it lasts forever or will treat a whole yard of horses!

Don't panic tho - Jenny had it once. I had to wash her & all her things with the stuff as described by TAMZ, then repeat 10 days later & that was that. All fixed.

Thanks for that - my horse is kept on my farm - no other horses but over 200 beef cattle - probably who he caught it from. Shall take your advice - thanks

It could also be lice. There's such an epidemic round our way (S Wales) that all the local vets have run out of Frontline! Initially, you get similar hair loss and its easy to mistake the two. If it's lice though, you can sometimes see the little horrors moving through the horse's hair. They move only very slowly and are easy to mistake for specks of dandruff or shavings. It makes owners instantly start to feel crawling sensations all over their bodies {{shudder}}.

If you're horse has ringworm, make sure you keep an eye out for it on yourself. I speak from experience!

If you've never seen it, google it for some pictures so you know what to look out for.

I have immaverol to hand as i live on a farm and it can lie dormant apparently for years. I treat any suspicious bald patches with it!

I wouldnt call the vet straight away tbh as there are no other horses around and tbh if it is from the cows then you will need to treat them too! Wait to see if it spreads in the form of more patches. If it does, get some immaverol from the vet and treat it. Then disinfect rugs. You can do brushes, stable etc with jeyes fluid. Ringworm is a pain in the neck! But not life threatening...unless it is a Wembley Show Horse! (Yes..I know...HOYS is no longer held at Wembley...But HOYS = Wembly to us oldies!!!)
