Does anyone else rinse their soaked hay? I soak mine and then just give it straight from the bucket - but have read that others rinse the soaked hay.

I am trying to keep an eye on my boys weight as he is on boxrest, so wanted to check that I am not missing a trick! :D

does rinising it contribute to the reducing of calories? i was planning on just sticking it (in a haynet) over a drain and using a hose - would that work?

I always pull it out the dustbin and hang it over the fence to drain off but always rinse in through with the hose once hung. And it's surprising how much dirty water keeps coming out. Don't see the point in soaking hay to leave loads off the sugary water left in it

Hello,

Not sure if you've seen Katy Watts site. Lots of interesting articles up for free. I've seen her speak and have her DVDs. She has an article about hay soaking but in reference to a particular mineral... Put articles are always interesting reading.

I'd soak for an hour or so, then rinse.. I think the sugar levels can be dropped even further with longer soaking but other nutrients start to deplete after an hour or so..(I think from current learning) sugared water is still sugar so need it all washed off.

If you've not seen her site before, please take a look and hope its of use.

Best wishes
Hannah

I was at a vet talk last weekend and they spoke about double soaking hay to further reduce the calorie content. Soak for 12+ hours, drain and allow to dry then soak again for an hour or two. The first soak removes up to 80% of the calories and the second soak takes out a further 10% so only 10+% calories of the original get fed. You do have to give a min/vit supplement though.

Thanks everyone - I rinised his haynet this morning and was surprised by how much sugary water there was! Will also have a look at the website.
