Just heard that Apache Sauce had to be PTS at Weston Park today. Such a shame as he seemed to be going so well for Emily Kimg. Thoughts and condolences to the family.

posted on behalf of Weston Park International Horse Trials.

It is with great sadness we announce that Apache Sauce number 256 ridden by Emily King, owned by Gillian Jones was put down at Weston Park horse trials on Saturday afternoon. Apache Sauce jumped the first fences beautifully. He was then pulled up lame between fences 2 and 3. Following a veterinary examination with his owner and Mary King the decision was made to put him down later that afternoon.

Very sad for all concerned, especially the horse! Maybe asking him to continue even at 2* was a bit of a mistake in hindsight? after he'd alerted his connections that he wasn't quite right earlier this season. Hope it wasn't a similar scenario to that of Best Mate when the warning signs weren't heeded with disastrous consequences, however what happened and him showing signs that something was hurting some months back may not have been connected.

How did Best Mate come into this? He just dropped dead, which unfortunately can happen to any horse.

Similarly, a horse can have a sudden disasterous break-down, or break a bone, completely out of the blue.

RIP horse, and commiserations to the connections.

All the reports said that Mary felt he was no longer enjoying parts of competing at 4 *. There was no talk about him being physically unable. He had had 5 good runs with Emily and seemed from alll reports to be going well. There really isn't much way of telling if a tendon will go and I think we can be pretty sure he was fit and ready. I have known friends horses rupture a tendon in the field just messing about so it's hard to guard against.

Took this at Burghley in 2008 - looks like Mary and he were enjoying this moment.
