Never been on a lead. Never given any food except what the family were eating. Supposed to have been culled as a puppy but escaped. Made 31 years old!

How was it verified, just out of interest?

It says in the article "Guiness consulted the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria to verify Bobi's age, and they confirmed his birthdate: May 11, 1992." I suspect the family also had photos.

Guinness have been pretty tight on their verification over the years, I would like to believe it's true.

Photos of a brown dog?

I don't think microchips were around in those days so it would be interesting to find out what records were on file with the vet to tie to that particular dog.

I'm sure we all know a farmer who's had a collie called Shep or five over the last half century!!

I found this on Euronews.

"His birth date had been confirmed by the Portuguese government's pet database and by the National Union of Veterinarians. Officials at the Guinness World Records on Monday said they were "saddened to learn of the death of Bobi, the world's oldest dog ever."

What links the dog to the database, I wonder? Microchip, ear tattoo, blood test?

Just an aside, he's not any of the colours listed on the linked AKC breed standard page for his breed on the original article.

We had a dog microchipped 33 years ago so they were.

Cynical, us?

I seen this and wondered had someone else seen the redaction

Suspicious changes of markings on the feet over the years was one of the big red flags I've read about.
That and the colour change- though some of that coat change could have down to him an aging dog with coat changes/sun bleaching and poor image quality making it hard to assess.
Disappointing that Guinness didn't their due diligence at the start.
