Made the tough decision to have our lovely Buffy pts today. For the first 6 years of her life she was totally overshadowed by her mother, but since we lost Chaka she proved to be quite a character, with probably the gentlest nature of any dog I have known. She had quite a few health problems in her later years which I have mentioned often on here, all quite challenging and we never really got answers as to what caused her sight to fail, some sort of brain tumour was a possibility. Her lack of sight made her very dependent on me, latterly she was never more than a few inches from me when I was at home, you would not believe how many times I turned round and tripped over her. Recently her cdrm was causing her more problems, and she was also becoming increasing confused when I took her in the garden at night. We had to face the fact that her quality of life was deteriorating, although she still would take a football from Evie and have a little play with it, and Evie bless her always gave up her toys to the old girl. The oft quoted saying on here "better a week too soon than a day too late" became very relevant, and after watching Marley & Me a couple of nights ago we decided Buffys time had come.
Our lovely vet, who had spent so many hours treating her, came out this afternoon, spent time fussing her and administered a sedative, and then once she had dozed off gave her the final injection . She will be cremated and her ashes buried next to her mum.
She will leave a huge gap, I have never in my life only had one dog, and I think Evie will find it very strange for a while. She too spent time with Buffy this afternoon and has I hope accepted that she has gone. I know others on here are facing this awful decision, and want to reassure you that amidst the sadness there is sense of relief that she is at peace now.
Sorry, this has turned out to be a bit long. This is one of my favourite pictures of our girl.
