I had a major confidence crisis at the beginning of last year and changed instructors. One of the things that helped me so much was riding one of my instructor's horses. An amazing little chap, in his 20s and a ball of muscle. He always reminded me of a tennis ball bouncing, all elastic, if you can picture that. I had brilliant lessons on him, loads without stirrups, in fact most. I had a canter on him in November and couldn't work out why it felt so weird - oh, I actually had my stirrups! The wonderful thing about Fly was that I could play around with him - lots of direct transitions, lateral work etc., that I had done on my old mare I lost in 2012 at 35, but that my lovely Cam is still learning.

Dear Fly was pts around a month ago. His arthritis had got too much for him along with his cushings. I can't even look at his photo without bursting into tears. That little horse who I didn't even own and rode once a week/fortnight just got right into my heart and gave me so much fun and confidence that it has broken me to know he has gone. My lovely instructor gave me fair warning, and it was definitely the right thing to do. But oh my goodness I miss him so much. As Cam and I progress in the future, there will be a massive Fly shaped hole in our hearts, but we will do it in his memory. RIP dear Fly, you were one in a million. xxxxxx

Oh so sad. He looks like a fab sort. I don't think it matters whether they're yours or not, they still leave their mark. RIP little lad.

Very sorry for you loss.
Remember him as inspiration as you continue to progress and at any time your confidence wavers, remember how he made you feel.
Again sorry for your loss.
Hugs xx

Your tennis ball analogy was perfect for him, he looked like a wonderful little horse. Rest in peace dear Fly, thinking of you Nicki xx

Thanks everyone - he was a complete dude, and an amazing little horse. Always happy to show his opinion when you asked him to do something he thought he could get away with not doing. And I never saw him move so fast when we were doing 10m canter circles and a pneumatic drill started up literally the other side of the indoor school wall. But whatever he did, it was never malicious. I know my instructor will see this thread as I have shared the link with her, and she definitely appreciates all your comments as he was a very special boy to her as well. Thank you. xx

What a lovely post. Yes 'tennis ball' horses are so much fun. Squash ball - thats a different matter!
He will always be there with you in your heart x
To the one who gave so much enjoyment - R.I.P Fly x
