A neighbour found a rough coated and very thin lurcher lying by the side of the road 7 years ago, not injured, just exhausted. We took him in, fed him up, took him to the vet, traced his owner who turned up to get him in tears saying that he couldn't keep him any longer, so he gave him to us.
Fred was a kind and intelligent lurcher, his only vice was to hop out of the garden when deer came by, but he always hopped back 20 minutes later. He looked after our daughter and our other lurcher, who is a very small dog rattling about inside a very large body. He was a very laid back dog with a giant heart. He developed epilepsy and had a period of 4 years of fitting on and off, but the fits wore off and the last 2 years of his life were free. They took their toll, though, his body became very weak and tired and his soul became sad. Yesterday we laid him down in the sunshine on his favourite blanket and the vet helped him on his way.
