Yesterday little Ruby was sadly taken away

Mum was only 9 weeks away from being full term and I had the worst phone call of my life to say she'd aborted.

A beautiful little filly with a blaze - I said right from the start I wanted a blaze as never owned a horse with one.

Mum is fine thankgod. Vet needs to be knighted, he's brilliant.

We took Ruby and the placenta to Newmarket (3 hour round trip) and thankgod it wasn't EHV-1. Probable diagnosis is Scoliosis - an abnormal lateral curvature of the vertebral column. Vet is convinced that if she had of gone full term they both would of died due to the positioning of the head and seeing her in the stable I totally agree with him.

She was flushed out again today and he's coming tomorrow for a final check. T-bag is out in the paddock keeping 'things moving'. She's a bit quiet but eating well and vet is happy with her.

My mum rang last night in tears to ask if they could get me another foal from somewhere else Bless them.

Sorry for such a sad post but needed to share.

sorry to hear of little Ruby's fate. I have scoliosis but this poor little mite never stood a chance

RIP Ruby run free over rainbow bridge:(.

RIP Ruby run free over rainbow bridge:(.

She was beautiful and I thought the way she was laying was just how 'she'd ended up' but when the vet said scoliosis and explained it this morning it made sense. Her neck was twisted and she was kind of looking behind. I'm thankful she wasn't born alive so didn't suffer.
I hope the condition isn't to painful for you but I very much doubt that, I hope you don't suffer to much.

Sorry to read this. Hope mum is ok :(

Mum is fine, showing no signs of grieving, eating well, still having a few contractions but is having Oxytosin injections(sp?) Second flush today and vet is coming again tomorrow as first tube empty (best way to describe it) wasn't as clean as he would of liked but other 2 were and he's happy with her.

So sorry to hear this. Sounds like it was what nature intended though, imagine losing your mare during labour too :(

Big hugs xxx

Thank god for mother nature or I would of lost T-bag as well. Doesn't bear thinking about.

Bloody horses, make you cry, make you smell and make you skint !

Oh, how awful for you... I'm so sorry, as I know how much time, effort, love and money we all put into this. Hopefully your mare will be back to herself in no time. Big hugs. :(

Vet has been out again to flush her out, no 'bits' today but still a bit pink in colour so he's going to do one more flush tomorrow. Poor Tilly, she's so fed up being an equine pin cushion but she doesn't put up any struggle.

Postmortem results tomorrow evening or Tuesday morning and blood results from T so I'll know for sure.

Vet says internally she's perfectly formed so can't see any problem not to cover her again and hopefully it was just rotten luck. Got give her a gentle lunge later for 5 minutes just to get things moving as he felt her cervix had just 'loosen' slightly since yesterday but nothing to concern him. She won't be impressed as I promised her her Gap year had just gone from one to two years ;)

Anyway a little gratuitus pic of her whilst waiting for the vet today.

:)

Sorry to hear this.
It's such a sad and shocking thing to happen.
Mare's are incredibly resilient, your mare seems to be of the 'well best just get on with thengs sort'. Poor thing xx

So very sorry for your loss, very distressing for you and her. Hope your mare continues to recover well, sounds like she's on the right track.

Thankyou, must admit thought we home and dry as it were :(

I'm so sorry for your loss. Run free little Ruby. I hope Tilly continues to do well

Thankyou.

OMG Ive just felt physically sick reading this you poor poor thing, sat at work choked up! Deepest sympathy and big hugs xxx

Sorry ! I know I've choked up many times reading RIP threads on here :(

Oh Sweetheart I am so very sorry . . . please keep us posted on how the mare is doing.

P

Thanks P.
My brilliant Vet came out again today to do a final flush and he's very pleased with her. Luckily he was on duty this weekend so he's seen her all four days. She however now hates him :o Poor Tils actually flinched when he came into her stable today. Her cervix felt more normal and she was happier walking out to the field and actually walked off with a little bit of purpose.
He said to give her a gentle lunge twice a day for the next couple of days to get things moving and she 'cleared herself out' quite a bit during tonights lunge.
She's certainly more herself tonight :)

When I got to work today one of the other girls had made a little hamper up full of carrots for her which she wolfed down :D

So plan is she'll have her foal season in about 10 days then in 30 odd days a normal season then the next one after that we'll cover her again.

Just waiting for the Vet to get back with the definitive results from Newmarket re the postmortem.

Thanks to everyone for all your kind words xx

Well had the postmortem results and a twisted umbilical :(

Tilly is much more herself now and even cantered off and dragged me towards the gate yesterday during what was meant to be a 'gentle' lunge. I think she likes this retirement business :)

Onwards and upwards, had my little cry, kicked a wall, hurt my toe, called the wall every name under the sun then realised I looked a right numpty !

At least it was just one of those things and not anything nasty that could have been passed on which is a bit of a relief I think.
Sounds like she's getting herself back on track, make sure you do the same, I know it's not easy.

Thanks M. I was feeling loads better but now feel as though I've been kicked in the guts again. So frustrating that such a 'simple' problem causes so much upset :(

I know it's not 'simple' but the best word I can think of !
