This morning my beautiful old mare was put to sleep. I knew this day was coming but that hasn't made it easier. She damaged a ligament over ten years ago and it was pronounced as a degenerative injury. For that time she has been a fabulous brood mare and field ornament, but she slowly lost the flexibility of the leg and although she wasn't in pain she found it difficult to carry the weight of a turnout rug and we worried that she might fall in the field. So the decision was made that once the weather turned this year we would say goodbye to her.
This mare gave me the confidence to get back in to jumping proper sized fences after a nasty rotational fall on my event pony. She made the move from ponies to horses easy on me. She hunted like a dream jumping 5 bar gates and hedges with ease, although she was an Arab she was pulled and plaited out hunting and people were always surprised to find out that she was actually a "mad Arab"! She would SJ courses of over 4 foot and I was going to affiliate her but never had the chance.
Since her injury she gave us 4 fabulous foals, 2 are purebreds and champions in the show ring and the one I have which is an Anglo is going to do her first BE Novice this weekend. I hope she makes her mother proud and manages to get round without dumping me!
Please excuse the photos my riding has improved a lot in the past ten years I promise you
I will always miss you luby loo
