McKelvey was, according to Racing UK, injured while running loose. Mick Fitz has been taken to hospital. Really nasty falls in the last race too, fingers crossed for those two jocks.

He fell at the 20th.... his back legs went right out behind, although he did get up and carry on a bit he looked like his legs were not doing as they were told...... back injury???

RIP Mckelvey

Just confirms to me that I made the right decision to stop supporting & watching horse racing, especially the grand national.

Another horse dies at the grand national weekend. How many deaths is it going to take until measures are made to try to prevent more fatalities?

RIP McKelvy

But measures are already taken to try and prevent injuries! The fences are smaller for a start, and just out of interest do you watch and support Badminton? And countless other horse events that often produce fatalities? It's sad, it's VERY sad, but if you want to prevent ALL deaths then I guess we should all just stop riding

Just to add, I don't mean to start a debate

Just googled him and it said

"He was very nearly right but a tendon injury picked up near the end of last year's big race prevented the victory that has been the Welsh trainer's dream for many years. Low key preparation this year and Bowen is convinced that the horse is over last year's injury problems but only time will tell. "

RIP

yes i read an article that said he'd only come 2nd last year due to a shattered tendon. they wired him up to a machine the same as is used to rehab footballers' injuries, to get him back to racing.

what an awful shame

Agree completely. Dont support it so refuse to watch it for this very reason.

nikkiportia - I watch Badminton and I do BE. However, not every year does a horse die, thankfully its rare. It seems to be almost guaranteed at the GN.

at least he went doing something he loved instead of bored out of his mind as a field ornament....

To tell you the truth i don't care if the jockeys are okay or not for all i care they can fall off and get completley trodden on for all i care. they get all the attention when the horses did all the racing!!!! the jockeys just steered them. if you miss Mckelvey then join this band on bebo for him

Didn't watch the national this year. I used to, but it seems that a horse or more dies every year. It's like they are being driven to death in a stampede.
Just don't want to be part of it.

so deaths during eventing are

RIP McKelvey

However how many horses die at events that you dont know about, or get home with injuries and are put down afterwards?

Yes it is a shame, but a lot of horses die, doing sports we enjoy on them, its just not as public as something like the Grand National

I hear what you are saying. I have always had the impression (and I may be wrong) that fewer event horses die in the sport or end up with significant injuries that may result in them being destroyed (whether the injury itself is acute or perhaps more chronic and career ending).
Perhaps I have the wrong impression, but it seems to me that race horses are put under strain at a very young age, before perhaps their bodies are ready for it. Some of the footage I have seen on TV about hundreds of ex-racers being sent to the knacler man and destroyed because they didn't make the grade also was tough to see.
I agree that horse deaths do occur in eventing, but the overall 'attitude' in the industry seems more caring towards the horse IMO. Also, I should think the number of deaths in eventing (horses) is far lower than the racing industry. If I am wrong, please correct me.

I am sure its less in eventing, however its unfair to say that it does happen or that we are running horses in a sport like BE which has the potential to cause harm or injury (to both horse and rider)

Also, racing is commercial, and i absolutely agree that they are run at a young age, i dont like the 2yrs olds running when they do. A major issue is, that often we are happy to let our event horses have time off, recover and come back to do another job where possible, whereas in racing it seems a lot more cut throat about what to do with a horse once injured. Maybe we need to look at life after racing to offer more options to injured racehorses...

Just my 2 pennies on it...

I knew this would happen, ever since the one show started following McKelvey it was obvious he was going to die. RIP gorgeous boy. I refuse to watch it as well! Was pissed off to hear Radio 1 started a sweep stakes to see how many fallers there would be and was disgusted by this cos townies obviously dont realise that fallers could die.......arseholes! sorry im sooo cross about him dying

I also read that the poor horse was loose and collided with a barrier - he never got up.

I don't want to argue with anyone, we are all entitled to our opinions, but I just don't like this race at all. To me the field is too large and there are too many "no hopers" that are not up to the job, which fall, or get loose causing more accidents. I think the death of any horse in these circumstances is one too many.
